Learning something new, finding good solutions to the problems that come up, either my own or those suggested by colleagues...

In short, the job itself.

I am a child of welfare states, and money is nice to have, but it does not gnaw at me as it would if I were desperate! That is the way I was brought up, anyway. Do your best, pay your dues, and trust.

My family does not motivate me to work, quite the opposite! Work separates families in my experience.

Faith? Maybe a sense of duty, that when I have promised to do a job, I deliver. In some of my former jobs, it was resignation to my fate, or a sort of bargain - 'Please get me through today and help me to find something better later on, and I will grit my teeth and give it what I can...' But not exactly motivation.

Success and recognition? Pull the other one, it's got bells on! I am far too self-centred, or I wouldn't sit here alone, glad to mind my own business and shut the world out.

The feeling that I'm useful and people respect my work enough to pay for it. I get a sense of gratification every time a job comes in. It also gives my life structure, which is important to me. And then there's always the money ....

Not being independently wealthy, I obviously need money to pay for things like food, shelter, clothing and transport... etc. so that's a no-brainer. However, I don't consider it to be my main motivating force. I have to work to earn the money to pay for all these things, and I just happen to be fortunate enough to be doing something I enjoy and am quite good at. I like being acknowledged and successful in what I do, but I don't think they are the main drivers either.

In fact, I find it very difficult to be able to answer absolutist questions like this. Like "what is your favourite X" or what is "the best" movie you have ever seen/book you have ever read...

As for faith... I set little store in that particular entelechy.

I am motivated by doing a job that I love, where I get the opportunity to learn new things on a regular basis.

Bills and other things like food, clothes, rent, stuff for my kids...

I enjoy my work, I love it, yes, sure, at the same time but what really gives you a motivation to start working and smile every morning is: "ok I have bills to pay, so shut up, do not complain and work!"

For me, the word " Success" covers everything on the list. It's a warm, comforting word that really motivates and encourages me on this journey.

To present a top quality and receive a good feedback.
To do a good job.
To help someone already in need for such help.
Many good things!

Other: Curiosity and freedom Apr 24, 2018

I like working with languages, because I get knowledge about many different subjects. As a language service provider, I can specialise in different fields read about a lot of topics. I don't know any work that is nearly so versatile.

The thing that keeps me going as a freelancer is my unpleasant experience as an employee. Maybe there are some good companies out there, but for me it was always a mixture of intrigues and dishonesty which I never want back. I have to say that "freedom"

I have to say that "freedom" also means "financial freedom", so "money" as an answer is not too wrong, but I definitely don't do this to drive a Ferrari one day.

Noble feelings that I would have joined until recently... Apr 24, 2018

...when I inherited a substantial amount of money. I was surprised at how much I become demotivated, I would never have said money was my primary motivation. Now i admit it is, carrying on (for various reasons) is a struggle.

Family Apr 24, 2018

That’s my reply but I should expand on it - I can’t provide for my family if I don’t work, and since both my partner and I are, as someone I know once put it, “employed by ourselves”, he has to work more for each month I don’t pull my weight and vice versa, so yeah, that’s quite a motivation. I like to afford nice things and like the feeling of being aware that what I am capable of doing paid for them.

I have never not worked, I wouldn't know how to do that.
