Vossemecê in Portugal Sep 22, 2007

"Vossemecê" is still used in rural areas in Portugal, being the way one would address one's elder. I was taught to address everybody in my family with "tu" (I was born just one and a half years before the Carnation Revolution...), so when I'm having a converstion with my mother and my grandmother, I address my grandmother with "tu" and my mother addresses her with "vossemocê".

Comment on the use of Vós Sep 23, 2011

Another great article by Danilo Nogueira.

Regarding the use of "Vós", it is also interesting to note that it is used in the Bible in Portuguese (example: "Amai a Justiça, vós que julgais a terra"). Also, in Paraibuna (SP), there is a cemetery bearing the words "Nós que aqui estamos, por VÓS esperamos" (something like "We are waiting for you")
