Hi

The computer-user's worst nightmare has happened! My PC stopped working (when I switch it on, I get as far as the blue HP logo screen then the screen goes black). There are a few files I would like to recover. Perhaps someone can recommend where I could go to in Paris (France) for this. The only placel I can think of is Surcouf.

There is a fair chance ... Jan 22, 2007

Hi Sandra,

I would take the harddisk to your new PC, mount it appropriately as master or slave, and there is a good chance that you could pick up your own files. What is damaged is probably only part of the HD where Windows is located. As your installation partly works, the HD is not still working. So good luck!

Best wishes
Erik

Bonne chance

Hi Erik

Thanks for your reply. I'm optimistic I can recover some data. Is what you suggest hard for a "non-technical" person such as myself? Also, having browsed the websites of date-recovery specialists, they all insist that the harddisk must be opened in a sterile environment (a "salle blanche" in French - I don't know what it's called in English). Is there a risk of damaging the harddisk if I access it myself?

Thanks for your advice,
Sandra

Better stay away from it. :) Jan 22, 2007

Hi Sandra,

Yes, there is such risk. Better leave your HDD in peace and let the professionals take care of it, since you really do not know what actually happened.

Cheers,
Ania

Consult independent computer shop Jan 22, 2007

When this happened to me a few years back, I packed up the entire computer and took it to my local shop, run by "computer geeks." They dropped the drive into another computer and were able to save my data to another medium. I think they charged me for an hour of their work.

Of course it depends on what's wrong, but I think the cleanroom is a last resort. There is a lot they can do before resorting to a "salle blanche". It may only be a software issue - I believe there are extensive

Of course it depends on what's wrong, but I think the cleanroom is a last resort. There is a lot they can do before resorting to a "salle blanche". It may only be a software issue - I believe there are extensive Recovery functions in XP, assuming that's what you're using.

I don't know exactly what Surcouf is, but it looks like a large chain similar to Mediamarkt in Germany. This is the last place you want to go IMO. Surely you know of a little shop in your neighborhood that builds and fixes computers from scratch, otherwise check the Yellow Pages and avoid the large chains.

Albert is absolutely right about someone potentially being able to fix your drive or transfer the data to another medium. In your case however I would not try to remove the hard drive as he suggests - just call a taxi and take the whole computer to the shop. Leave the rest to the experts.

Good luck!
Michele

More and more optimistic! Jan 22, 2007

Thanks Michelle, that's what I'm going to do. I'm glad to hear you were charged for an hour's work. The specialists seem to charge hundreds of euros!

If anyone has ever used the services of a company in Paris for this I'd be happy to know (Albert has already suggested Aquarum).

Sandra

This could easily be done ... Jan 23, 2007

Hi again, Sandra!

If you know a friend who has done things like this before - taking the HD to another PC, for instance - she or he could easily do it, but you must be certain that she/he knows how to.
NB: Never open the HD!

I have done such things many times, exchanging spare parts, rescuing data, and believe me, it is not difficult. You only need to know what you are doing. Unfortunately Paris is long distance ...

If in doubt, do ask again.

Another option Jan 23, 2007

Here's something else you could try: If you have your windows CD, then try to boot your computer from the CD. I believe you have to press F12 when the computer first starts up, so before you get to the HP screen. It doesn't cost a dime to try that and it may just work. You will then be able to save your files to a CD.
Good luck!

Try FNAC Jan 23, 2007

Hello

As you live in Paris, or in the area, you probably know "la FNAC". They have a "PC clinic" open to everybody, i.e not only to their customers, and they charge 45 euros for a health check (about 1 hour). Check their site or simply the yellow pages for addresses. Worth checking as they have a good reputation.

Good luck

Happy end! Jan 23, 2007

The company Albert recommended did an on-the-spot job and recovered all the data I needed for 50 euros.
I'm really happy (and relieved!).

Thanks everyone and Albert for the tip-off
