Hello everyone

Just a quick reminder: 31 January is the last day that you can request a copy of the old files and messages from all Yahoogroups groups that you are a member of. After that, Yahoo says that they're going to delete it. You don't have to be a group owner or moderator to request the files and messages.

Hello everyone

Just a quick reminder: 31 January is the last day that you can request a copy of the old files and messages from all Yahoogroups groups that you are a member of. After that, Yahoo says that they're going to delete it. You don't have to be a group owner or moderator to request the files and messages.

Log in, verify your e-mail address using a code, click the Download link, and specify at which e-mail address you want to be notified when the download is ready (it can take a day or two, or a week or two). The download package is a single zip file that contains all files, photos and messages posted by everyone in the groups that you are a member of (only the groups that you are currently a member of, not the groups that you used to be a member of). In my case, the download package was 1.2 GB.

To recap: Late last year, Yahoo announced that they are going to shut down most of the features of Yahoogroups by mid-December 2019, and that includes deleting all files and all old messages, and for most groups also no longer making new messages available via the web. The announcement prompted many groups to move to other services, e.g. Google Groups, Groups.io, MailMan, ListServ, etc. The wording of Yahoo's announcement was ambiguous and this lead some group owners to believe that message archives would still be available, but they were in for an unpleasant surprise when the original deadline arrived. Group owners who dealt with this in a timely fashion were able to "rescue" most or all of the groups' content. Ordinary users (not just group owners or moderators) could (and still can, until the new deadline of 31 January) request a copy of "their" data. The groups at Yahoogroups still exist, and can still be used for sending messages via e-mail, but messages are no longer kept on the server, and features like "going nomail" or joining a group without having to be invited were removed.
