When I purchased a MemoQ licence, they claimed MemoQ is compatible with Trados packages and bilingual files.

Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to include compatibility with SDLTM files.

The only help from MemoQ I've been able to find is this article:

https://kb.kilgray.com/article/AA-00323/0/Convert-SDLTM-and-SDLTB-without-SDL-Trados-Studio-or-MultiTerm.html

I've downloaded the program and dll, but once I click start to convert to TMX, nothing happens, except that it generates a tiny 1 KB TMX file.

I'm waiting for an urgent MemoQ ticket, but as this is urgent, I wanted to ask if anyone here has come across a similar problem.

Ask for a tmx Oct 6, 2015

I usually ask for a tmx of that sdltm and that's OK. Trados can export these, although it's not its first choice.

I'm not sure what format TMs are in Trados packages, but they works like a dream as well.

If you're in a bind Oct 6, 2015

I have studio so I can export it for you if you're in a bind.

Thanks, but Oct 6, 2015

Thanks, Jenae, that's kind of you, but the NDA prevents me from sending files out. This is supposed to be a long-term cooperation, so we'll need a permanent solution anyway.

Kilgray: SDLTM not supported Oct 6, 2015

Here is Kilgray supports' reply:

"Thank you for contacting us. memoQ cannot handle SDLTM files on their own at the moment, only if they are inside of SDLPPX packages. Both programs can use TMX files for TM operations (import/export), so my suggestion would be to use that."

That's clear. The client has confirmed they's supply TMX.

That's for your comments.

I figured that would be the case but thought I would offer.

Just open sdlppx in memoQ and go on Oct 6, 2015

Studio includes TM into its packages as *.SDLTM
However, it does not matter at all. memoQ easily imports Studio packeges and returns them.

1. From 'Project' menu choose 'Import Package' => 'SDL Studio Package'
2. Browse to *.sdlppx
3. Check the 'Import translation memories' box

After you are done with translation, 'Export Active Document' from the same 'Project' menu to create a return package.

So their claimed 'memoQ is compatible with Trados packages' is totally true.

I DON'T have an sdlppx Oct 6, 2015

Stepan,

Thanks for your comment. If I had an sdlppx, I would have imported it, as I well know that format is supported.

But the point is, as I tried to explain, but perhaps not clearly enough, that I do not have an sdlppx file. I cannot very well import a file I don't have.

Sorry for misunderstanding Oct 6, 2015

Your fisrt line was 'they claimed MemoQ is compatible with Trados packages' (which is unusual but true in fact).
On the other hand, sdltm is not a native format for memoQ (which is obvious without mentioning).

So they just outline unusual features (Studio package support) and do not mention non-existing features (sdltm support). Isn't it obvious?
Why should they give information on what memoQ cannot do.

That was what caused my misunderstanding. Sorry again.

Yes, could be misunderstood Oct 6, 2015

I can see how it could be misunderstood, and it wasn't entirely clear from my side.

They do indeed support such packages. The trouble is of course, as you indicate, that the way they write their promotional texts may make you think they support more than they do, and when one knows very little about CAT formats, it's easy to get caught by the omissions.

MemoQ is still incomplete in some ways, but it's also a younger product than Trados, and cheaper.

I referred to their KB and documentation. It would be very reasonable to include a list of common translation-related formats they cannot handle. When I'm searching for information about support for a format, I don't know if not finding anything means it's not supported, or if it has been forgotten in the documentation. The latter has already happened with MemoQ. They don't need to plaster it up and down on their marketing pages, but at least a KB article would be a courteous gesture.

Why would anyone expect a CAT tool list of unsupported formats to include cooking, singing, flying and making cars? Aren't you exaggerating a bit?

Well... This is what any good promotion is indended for LOL.

Why would anyone expect any tool to include what is not mentioned?

Promotion Oct 6, 2015

"Well... This is what any good promotion is indended for LOL."

Yes. Unfortunately, that doesn't help when one runs into problems. We cannot all be specialists in everything, so unfortunately, we sometimes buy something without knowing all about it. We'd never get anything done if we should study all product specifications, terms and conditions, all possible requirements etc.

By the way, WfConverter.exe does work and can convert sdltm to tmx. I thought it was broken because no progress was shown, and the output file was empty. But the client sent an empty TM instead of just telling me to create a new TM to be exported in the end.

Not mentioning (by them).

And no, it doesn't mean what you say. In a recent case, I needed a format that turned out to be supported but forgotten from their list of supported formats. That's why it's useful also to specifically mention unsupported formats somewhere.

But how can you know all unsupported formats? Oct 6, 2015

There are million formats. You just cannot (physycally) include them all.
That's why only supported formats are always metioned. Not just memoQ, but any other software manufacturer behave this way. Not a surprize...

Millions of CAT formats? Oct 6, 2015

Millions of CAT formats????

I don't think so. You're saying those who write CAT tools don't know which CAT formats exist, apart from the most obscure, perhaps. I don't believe that.

You can always find plenty of excuses not to do something, but it's usually more productive to look for ways to do them. When the telephone and the computer were invented, there was similar scepticism. If we had listened to all the luddites, we'd still be living in caves.

Even if they don't mention the most obscure formats, sdltm isn't an obscure format.

Of course such a list can be produced in little time if they want to.
