Every so often I try to figure out which to use, when, where, how and why. Do you have a favourite? Discuss. Michael

What do you use for "приложение"? I usually call it "supplement", but I have seen both "annex" and "appendix" used for it.

An interesting topic. Thanks to Camila and James for the links, which will come in handy if I ever have to choose between annex and appendix again. In the past I've used them pretty much interchangeably, but from now on I'll apply the criteria in the links. PS: I used to prefer "appendix" because it saved me having to think about which version of annex/annexe was the right one each time it cropped up...

EU documentation? | Jul 18, 2013 |
Annex is almost always used in connection with EU documentation, it seems. Otherwise, I tend to use appendix, especially if it is/they are numbered. Attached and enclosed are also useful variants.

After reading the three links posted here, I come to the conclusion that they are simply synonyms and mean exactly the same thing, and it up to the author to decide which term to use.

[Edited at 2013-07-18 08:56 GMT] I do exactly the same! I've done quite a lot of research on the subject and have also concluded that "appendix" and "annex" are synonymous. If not, I haven't yet captured the distinction.

In British English | Jul 18, 2013 |
one is the verb and the other is the noun i.e. to annex an annexe to a contract (I think that's the way around it goes but I always have to look it up which has led me to give up and use "append an appendix").
