Hello

What would be the best free antivirus for Windows 7 Professional? Is it as good as the ones you have to buy?

Thank you.

Jean-Pierre

Avast Sep 14, 2013

Free, simple and powerful, it doesn't slowdown the computer (PC or Desktop).
I've been using it for years now without any problem: http://www.avast.com/en-us/index
Cheers!

Avira Free Antivirus Sep 14, 2013

I have been using Avira Free Antivirus for some time now.

"Avira was the most effective in this category at detecting malware in files. It’s easy to use and was efficient at managing resources. It includes a way to recover when malware stops your computer from booting. Avira also has a full suite with more features, at a price."

Just about the only thing that annoys me about this one is a window that pops up reminding me about the paid edition. Of course, I just ignore it.

I have been using Avira for a few years, first the free version, then I upgraded to the paid version (for 3 computers) which I have been using for about 3 years now.

It was recommended by an IT expert during a computer training which I attended years ago.

Paid vs Free Sep 14, 2013

From what I've read there really is little to no difference between the paid and free anti-virus programs. The paid ones probably include "extras" like online backup, storage and PC tune-ups (I had these with my last paid one and NEVER used them). So if all you want is an anti-virus with none of the frills, I'd go for a free one.

I have tried several free and paid ones, but for me the best is Microsoft's own antivirus: windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security-essentials-download‎ (now integrated by default in Windows 8). Free, light, effective.

System refusing to download the antivirus programs Sep 14, 2013

I've tried to download every free virus that you suggested (Microsoft, AVAST, Avira, Malwarebytes and Panda Cloud). Every time the download ended with a message saying something like: "this program contained a virus and has been suppressed". Which is all the more surprising since I had to remove NOD 32 and I am supposed to have no antivirus now!
Hence I think the problem comes from my own computer.
Any suggestions for the next steps?
Jean-Pierre

@ Jean-Pierre Sep 15, 2013

After the most recent update for my Windows Security Essentials, MalwareBytes found a virus during my weekly scan. After doing some research, it turned out to be some program bit that tracks your computer to be able to send regular updates for your antivirus program. I forgot its name, something with "Pop". Other antivirus programs will identify it as malware.

Edited for typo

According to Matousec... Dec 21, 2013

... (http://www.matousec.com/projects/proactive-security-challenge-64/results.php) there's still no better thing than a properly configured Comodo Internet Security and sensible approach.
