Hi,

I'm interested in learning about subtitling and/or closed captioning but have no clue where to start. This forum seems like the good place to ask

Hi,

I'm reading up on it but books about this are scarce, especailly closed captioning. This was a very interesting read: http://www.amazon.com/The-Elements-Subtitles-Third-Edition/dp/130066715X

How would be a good way to start? (besides downloading free subtitling apps? I've tinkered with CaptionMaker a bit)

- book suggestions?
- taking a subtitling/media course?
- subtitling short videos on freelance? (not just yet)

Would this eventually lead to QA'ing captions?

The job is becoming more and more automated and western hemisphere countries will probably be left with jobs related to live captioning and respeaking. I would suggest taking a course on the automated aspects of captioning, especially respeaking (or whatever it might be replaced with), because that seems to be the future. Even the qualilty control of Indian/Philippines-made captions will probably be made as automatic as possible.
