Hi all,

What are the most frequently used subtitling softwares?
I'm such a novice in this field!
Thanks

Diego

"Subtitling software": to do what kind of subtitling?
VHS, Betacam, other magnetic supports...?
DVD?
35, 16 mm.?
Electronic subtitling?
Laser subtitling?
Do you want to subtitle, or just translate for subtitling?
It's a very large and complex activity: please, be more accurate.
Salute.

What about one software that can handle all that and more? Just cite one or two industry standard programmes. It can't get as complicated as that.

What I have found out is that some companies have their own in house software, and customise it to work with various media formats.

Cheers,

TOPIC STARTER
Question May 21, 2005

I was asked by a company:"Do you use any subtitling software, and if yes, which ones?"

Dunno what to answer...
I guess they mean in general, but mostly DVD and VHS.

Subtitling software May 22, 2005

I use Subtitle Workshop (http://www.urusoft.net/ ). It is free. It is designed for movies on PC, not VCR, so you will have to capture the movie, if you want to use movie from VHS.

Your answer cannot be anything else but: NO.

Subtitling softwares are designed for that purpose, and if you don't know any of them then you obviously don't use them.
There is no point to pretend, or quickly buy one, and hope for the best. It may not be compatible with what they use.

If anything, it is more relevant, what they use. If they are considering giving work to you, they would try you out, giving you word files to translate to start with. These would be real jobs, they can convert them for their use. If it works out between you, you can discuss it with them, what is the next step towards a software program.

Don't worry, if they know that you are a beginner in subtitling, they don't expect you to have a software program. Your aptitude and capabilities are more important.
You can't pretend that you are not a beginner, because an experienced eye can see it straight away. A subtitler I used to work with always said: you are a beginner, until you have done at least 30 films.

Good luck.

To Claudio and Diego. May 23, 2005

Claudio:
Quote: "It can't get as complicated as that."
Well, I guess there are several hundreds of softwares for subtitling... yes, it is very complicated.
Diego: for DVD, yes, Subtitle Workshop.
I'm with juvera: if you don't have any idea, just tell your client: "I'm not the man for that job."
Translation/subtitling is a very serious matter, believe me.
Best of lucks, thought.
