Powwow Report for Russian Federation - Moscow, Russia (Sep 29 2007)
| Report from Yamato (X) | Dear fellow prozians and translators!
To celebrate the international powwow day, our merry group decided to meet at the Chaspik (lit. Rush hour) cafe, in one of the central avenues in Moscow.
Not only had we time to get to know each other and discuss the finer points of our profession, we also took a moment to answer the questions that were suggested for by Romina, and so we want to share them with you.
Oh, but let me start by the very end:

[u]Venue:[/u] As mentioned before, Chaspik. The general impression was good, and the service was nice and fast. Other than that, we tried to reach some general conclussions about the place, and we organized a debate. In the end, we only managed to agree on one point: there were no wallpapers.
Not everyone liked its exact location or musical ambiance (techno).
[u]Atendees:[/u] there were twelve, including a friend not acquinted to proz.com
[u]First time atendees:[/u] 4. We made pranks on them, as is customary.

[u] Languages present: [/u] Russian (you guess), English, French, Plish, Ukranian, Spanish (just poor me), Sanscrit and German.
(It's the order they are in, in the attendance sheet).

[u] Biggest local Issue: [/u] The very first word everyone uttered was "rates". I do not think that is going to surprise anyone.
The second issue, perhaps more original, is Soviet Realia. When translating from Russian, all of us had encountered many concepts or power structures which are difficult to translate. Not only they did not exist on other languages, the system was so different that there isn't even a close equivalent!

[u] How is the international translators' day celebrated? [/u]: Well, the oficcial answer that we wrote is "Privately at home". That, of course, is an euphemism for "Wait, is it a celebration?".

[u] Your proposal for next year's dicussion at the International Translators' Federation:[/u]
If last year the subject was "Don't shoot the messenger", we agreed to mantain the "shooting" theme, and so we propose "Shoot dumpers". For the sake of justice I have to mention that a significant faction of the debate thinks that the proposal is incomplete, and that it should read "Shoot dumpers AND lousy translators".

I need a little bit of help, the attendance list is a more complicated issue than I thought.
I need the ID numbers of Natalia Aleksandrovna and Andrei Diavlev.
The problem is that, either you only show your pseudonim, or you have not signed up.
In the first case, I cannot distinguish you from those who did not come, and in the second, I can't find your profile through the "search by name" tool.
I tried all the gumshoe methods I know, nothing worked, so I have to ask.
