Exhibe una conservada variedad de formaciones vegetales (bosques semideciduos, bosques siempreverdes micrófilos y matorrales xeromorfos costeros, entre las principales) y flora y fauna muy apreciadas ya que atesora un elevado nivel
de endemismo terrestre.
Lo distinguen también arrecifes coralinos (390 km2), manglares de variados tipos (1628 km2), grandes extensiones de pastos marinos, hermosas playas de arenas blancas y transparentes
aguas de impresionantes tonalidades.
Este variado hábitat, alberga también gran cantidad de aves migratorias que transitan entre norte y Sudamérica, constituye uno de sus encantos para el turismo de naturaleza y las investigaciones científicas.
