What exactly is down?
Down is the light, fluffy undercoating that geese, ducks, and other waterfowl have to keep warm. They consist of clusters of soft filaments without the quill shaft.
How can down insulate so well?
Every ounce of quality down has about 2 million fluffy filaments that interlock and overlap to form a protective layer of air that keeps warmth in and cold out. Because of its resilience, you can “scrunch” it up or flatten it out. All it takes is a good shake for it to fluff up and bounce back to the form that keeps you warm.

WHERE’S the flood, guys?
Judging by the number of bared ankles appearing on the streets this summer, the rolled cuff look of 2009 appears to have become the rolled cuff epidemic of 2010. Legions of young men, including ones who are not bicycle messengers, are rolling up their pants legs to such high-water lengths that one is tempted to inquire where exactly the auditions for the Huckleberry Finn revival are being held. A style born on the shores of the Mississippi has been reinvented for the streets of Bushwick.
“It’s almost like a masculine shabby chic,” said Tom Julian, a fashion consultant and the author of two men’s style books with Nordstrom.
Every five years or so, the fashionable male discovers some styling trick to make the same old thing wearable in a dandy new way — the deep jeans cuff, the double-flipped shirt-sleeve cuff — and the next thing you know, men are trying it in Midtown.
The newest look, a lightly pinched cuff that should fall about an inch or two above the ankle, is likely a result of two factors. First, the skin-baring shrunken-suit style popularized by Thom Browne has, by now, become as acceptable to the mainstream as flat-front khakis. And second, the glorified boat shoes and retro canvas sneakers on the market seem to cry out to be worn with pants that will show them off. (A third, less likely factor might be the heat.)
“As cropped pants have become such a style, this is an easy way to get around shortening your pants by three inches,” said Josh Peskowitz, the style editor of Esquire.com, who had rolled up his pants that very morning. “It’s noncommittal.”
Getting the roll right is harder than it looks, and the experts differ on technique. Mr. Julian suggests rolling one inch of cuff three times for cotton canvas trousers, and a single two-inch cuff for dark jeans.
For slightly looser pants, like chinos, Mr. Peskowitz advises creating a peg by pinching the fabric slightly at the front during the rolling process. Starting from the bottom, you flip once, making as small a fold as possible, then twist the front of the pants leg by about an inch, then roll twice more while holding the pinch tightly. The pleats should stay in place.
“You want to make sure that both are pointing inward — for the left side, fold it to the right. For the right, fold it to the left — to stay symmetrical,” he said. “I just figured that out a couple of weeks ago.”
By the way, there are several don’ts. No formal shoes. No rolled-up skinny jeans. No wool pants — the rolls won’t stay. No bootleg pants, which should be burned anyway. And since rolled pants are meant to look casual, nothing about the outfit should be dressy, at the risk of looking too studied. While you’re at it, stop trying so hard.
Jim Moore, the creative director of GQ, said the goal should be to look nonchalant, since you don’t want to make the roll so perfect that it draws attention. “The roll has to feel a bit unintentional,” he said.
Given the unlikelihood of accidentally rolling up one’s pants, Mr. Moore offered some clarification: “You have to channel Johnny Depp for that moment and ask yourself, ‘How would Johnny Depp roll up the bottom of his pants?’ ”
If you still can’t figure it out, you might ask Mr. Depp about shorts.

Julian suggère d’effectuer trois fois un revers d’un pouce pour les pantalons en toile de coton et un seul revers de deux pouces pour les jeans foncés.
Pour les pantalons un brin plus amples tels que ceux en tissu chino, M. Peskowitz recommande de pincer légèrement l’avant de la jambe lorsqu’on roule le pantalon. En commençant par le bas, roulez la jambe une fois en créant un tout petit pli. Ensuite, tournez l’avant de la jambe d’environ un pouce et roulez-la deux fois de plus tout en la tenant fermement à l'endroit où vous l'avez pincée. Les plis devraient tenir en place.
M. Peskowitz ajoute : « Vous devez vous assurer que les deux plis pointent vers l’intérieur, c’est-à-dire, le pli de gauche vers la droite et le pli de droite vers la gauche afin que le tout soit symétrique. J’ai découvert cette astuce il y a quelques semaines. »
Notez qu’il y a plusieurs éléments incompatibles avec ce look, tels que les chaussures habillées et les jeans skinny. Ne roulez pas les pantalons de laine parce qu’ils se dérouleront. Les pantalons à jambe bottillon sont également à proscrire, voire à brûler. De plus, étant donné que le look pantalon roulé a été conçu afin d’avoir une apparence décontractée, votre ensemble ne doit comprendre aucune pièce habillée, car vous risquez de passer pour quelqu’un qui a étudié son look en excès. Source text - English On our July 28th earnings announcement, we said we will continue to aggressively manage our costs, particularly given the macro-economic forecasts that are highly uncertain. We have been very effective in transitioning many of our services and functions into the brands – becoming brand-centric. We now face bringing the central organization in line size-wise and believe that we continue to have cost reduction opportunities, especially in the corporate center.
The $25 million cost reduction program announced on that day is well underway. A large portion of this will come from the distribution center initiative, but the balance is coming from cost cuts in other corporate centers. Unfortunately people and positions are also included – and that is the basis of this announcement.
In reviewing the organization, we are taking a top-to-bottom approach, leaving no departments untouched. In fact, the first reductions are coming from within the executive ranks and include the elimination of two important senior ranking positions.
After 23 years at LCI Lisa Piovano-Machacek, SVP, Chief Human Resources Officer will be leaving the company on October 14th. In the 18 months she has been in this role, Lisa has significantly enhanced the HR function in both the corporate areas and in Partnered Brands, while supporting the brand HR teams and building a strong HR community across the corporation as a whole. Having completed this work, we mutually determined that her position be eliminated. The ways in which Lisa has contributed to LCI over the course of her career are too numerous to mention, but suffice it to say her talent, her spirit and her enthusiasm are appreciated and will be greatly missed.
Peter Warner, SVP, Global Sourcing & Operations will also be leaving the company. Peter joined LCI in 2008 and was instrumental in negotiating and managing one of the first transformational initiatives we undertook – the move to use Li & Fung as our corporate sourcing agent. This is especially notable because it is not what he was hired to do; he was hired to run our Hong Kong-based sourcing group. But hats off to Peter – he adapted and helped the whole company to adapt as well. He helped build each of our brand’s sourcing teams – a legacy that will last for years. He has also been instrumental in helping the brands implement their globalization strategies. Peter’s last day will be September 30th.
