Nederland importeerde in 2016 voor een recordbedrag van 433 miljoen euro aan avocado's. Daarmee is Nederland na de VS de grootste avocado-importeur ter wereld. Vier op de vijf ingevoerde avocado's zijn niet voor Nederlandse consumptie, maar gaan door naar andere landen. Dat meldt het CBS op basis van aanvullende analyse van recent gepubliceerde cijfers.
In acht jaar tijd is de invoerwaarde van avocado's ruim verviervoudigd. Bij geen enkele belangrijke fruitsoort was de groei zo groot. De avocado staat nu na de druif op de tweede plek. Ook de invoer van bananen is sterk gegroeid, waardoor de banaan op plek drie eindigde, gevolgd door sinaasappelen en meloenen. De invoer van appelen is in acht jaar tijd juist fors gedaald.
Groot deel avocado's voor wederuitvoer
Een groot deel van de avocado's (79 procent) is niet voor de Nederlandse markt bestemd, maar voor andere landen. Voor het overgrote deel gaat het om Europese landen. De rest consumeren we zelf. Voor Nederlandse consumptie was in 2016 ongeveer 39 miljoen kilogram avocado's beschikbaar. In 2008 was dat nog 10 miljoen kilogram. De invoer voor de Nederlandse markt ligt op het hoogste niveau ooit.
Grootste producent Mexico vooral gericht op VS
Mexico is wereldwijd met afstand de grootste producent van avocado's. Toch haalt Nederland meer uit Peru, Chili en Zuid-Afrika. De helft van de Nederlandse invoer komt uit Peru en Chili. Mexico bedient met name buurland VS, na Mexico zelf de grootste consument van avocado's.
VS met afstand grootste avocado-importeur
De Amerikanen importeerden in 2016 in waarde ruim drie keer zo veel avocado's als Nederland. Na Nederland volgen Frankrijk, het Verenigd Koninkrijk, Japan en Duitsland. De in Duitsland ingevoerde avocado's komen voor een groot deel uit Nederland. Ook voert Nederland veel avocado's door naar Noorwegen, Zweden en Denemarken.

In 2016, the Netherlands imported avocados for the record amount of 433 million euros. This makes the Netherlands, after the USA, the second largest importer of avocados in the world. However, four out of five imported avocados are not for domestic consumption, but get sent to other countries. This was reported by the CBS, the Central Bureau of Statistics, on the basis of additional analysis of recently published figures.
Over the last eight years, the import value of avocados has quadrupled. This growth has not been seen in any other important type of fruit. The avocado is now second only to grapes. Banana imports have also grown robustly, ending up in third place, followed by oranges and melons. Apple imports have, however, fallen sharply over the same period.
Avocados mostly for global export
A large percentage of the avocados (79 percent) are not destined for the Dutch market, but for other countries. For the large part, these are European countries. The balance is consumed by people in the Netherlands. In 2016, there were approximately 39 million kilograms of avocados available for local consumption. In 2008 that amount was only 10 million kilogram.
Largest producer, Mexico, focused on the US
Mexico is, by far, the largest producer of avocados in the world. The Netherlands, however, gets most of its produce from Peru, Chile and South Africa. Half of the Dutch imports come from Peru and Chile. Mexico provides mainly to the neighbouring USA, and is, itself, the largest global consumer of avocados.
The USA is the world's largest avocado importer
In 2016, America imported three times as many avocados as the Netherlands. After the Netherlands, comes France, the UK, Japan and Germany. The avocados imported to Germany come largely from the Netherlands. The Netherlands also exports many avocados to Norway, Sweden and Denmark.
