Source text - English Understanding purchasing and consumption behaviour is a key challenge for marketers. Consumer behaviour, in its broadest sense, is concerned with understanding both how purchase decisions are made and how products or services are consumed or experienced. Some purchase decisions involve long, detailed processes that include extensive information search to select between competing alternatives. Other purchase decisions, such as impulse buys or habitual purchases, are made almost instantaneously with little or no investment of time or effort in information search. Some purchase decisions are made by groups (such as families, households or businesses) while others are made by individuals. When a purchase decision is made by a small group, such as a household, different members of the group may become involved at different stages of the decision process and may perform different roles. For example, one person may suggest the purchase category, another may search for product-related information while yet another may physically go to the store, buy the product and transport it home.
It is customary to think about the types of decision roles, such as:
The Initiator: the person who proposes a brand (or product) for consideration (something in return);
The Influencer: someone who recommends a given brand;
The Decider: the person who makes the ultimate purchase decision;
The Purchaser: the one who orders or physically buys it;
The User: the person who uses or consumes the product.
In a family unit, the adult female often makes brand choices on behalf of the entire household, while children can be important influencers.
Translation - French La compréhension des comportements d’achat et de consommation constitue un défi de taille pour les spécialistes du marketing. Au sens large, l’étude du comportement des consommateurs vise à comprendre la manière dont sont prises les décisions d’achat et dont les produits ou services sont consommés ou utilisés. Certaines décisions d’achat impliquent des processus longs et détaillés, notamment la recherche approfondie d’informations dans le but de choisir entre les différentes propositions. D’autres décisions, comme dans le cas d’achats impulsifs ou routiniers, peuvent être prises presque instantanément ; le consommateur n’accorde alors pas (suffisamment) de temps et d’attention à la recherche d’informations. Certaines décisions d’achat se prennent en groupe (par exemple, au sein d’une famille, d’un foyer ou d’une entreprise), tandis que d’autres sont prises individuellement. Lorsqu’un petit groupe (comme un foyer) décide d’acheter quelque chose, plusieurs membres de ce groupe peuvent s’impliquer à différentes étapes du processus de décision et endosser divers rôles. Il est par exemple envisageable qu’une première personne suggère un achat dans une catégorie donnée, qu’une deuxième recherche des informations liées au produit et qu’une troisième se rende au magasin, achète le produit dont il est question et le ramène à la maison. Il est fréquemment possible de déterminer différents rôles liés à la prise de décisions, par exemple :
L’initiateur : la personne qui soumet une marque ou un produit à l’attention du consommateur (en lui promettant donc une contrepartie à son achat) ;
L’influenceur : la personne qui recommande une marque ou un produit donné ;
Le décideur : la personne responsable de la décision d’achat finale ;
L’acheteur : la personne qui commande ou achète le produit ;
L’utilisateur : la personne qui utilise ou consomme le produit.
Au sein d’un foyer, c’est souvent la femme adulte qui choisit les marques utilisées par toute la famille ; les enfants peuvent, quant à eux, fortement influer sur sa décision.
