Source text - English An MRI scanner is a large, cylinder-shaped magnet. Patients can feel quite claustrophobic but those who say it makes them dizzy will be glad to know it's not all in their mind. Powerful magnetic fields and radio waves create detailed images from within the body and may affect the inner ear. Unlike X-rays, MRI scans do not involve
exposing the body to radiation. This means that people who may be vulnerable to the effects of radiation, such as pregnant women and babies, can safely use them.
People with pacemakers and other implants may not be able to have an MRI scan.
Radio waves 10,000 to 30,000 times stronger than the magnetic field of the earth are
sent through the body. The magnetic field causes the alignment of particles, called protons, which are found naturally within the body, mostly in hydrogen atoms. Almost all the protons found within the body are affected by the strong magnetic field. Once
the magnetic field is switched off, the protons go back to their pre-MRI position, sending out radio waves of their own. The scanner picks up these signals and a computer turns them into a picture. Different protons send out different signals, depending on which tissue the proton can be found in. For example, a proton found in bone will emit a very different radio wave signal when compared to a proton found in blood.
It is these signal differences which allow a picture to be created, and allow different tissues or structures to be distinguished from one another.
