Before the advent of Islam, the pagan Arabs treated women as mere chattels and as simple objects of sexual pleasure. They had no rights in the society of the day and suffered the horror of seeing their female children buried alive.
It was into this social environment that the revelation and the teachings of the Holy Qur'an were introduced. It was quite simply revolutionary. Islam regards men and women as being of the same essence and created from the same soul. The Prophet of Islam (peace be upon him) caught the essential unity of men and women when he said "Women are the twin halves of men," echoing the simile in the Qur'an;
"They (your wives) are your garment and you are a garment for them."
This set the pattern for the behavior of a Muslim man towards his wife and bound it to his religious duty, emphasized in the Prophet's (peace be upon him) pronouncement that "The more civil and kind a Muslim is to his wife, the more perfect in faith he is."
There is absolutely no difference between men and women as far as their relationship with Allah is concerned. The same rewards for pious conduct and the same punishments for bad conduct apply to both sexes.
This sense of equity carries over into Shari'ah law, which regards women as the spiritual and intellectual equals of men. The distinction that Shari'ah makes between them is based on the division of labour, allotting more strenuous physical work to men and making him responsible for the maintenance of the family. The work of managing the home, bringing up and training the children to become useful and healthy members of society is given to women. As a result, a mother is the paramount figure in terms of respect and to who all defer.
A woman in Islam is a completely independent personality, free to contract or bequeath in her own name, choose a husband and inherit in her role as wife, sister, mother or daughter.
Muslim, men and women alike, regard the position and roles of women as part of their religious duty. There is no separation of the teachings of the Qur'an from daily life. So it is that western ideas of women's liberation are seen as something beyond reasonable and pious understanding and viewed as simple exploitation of women for commercial purposes.
Translation - Arabic النساء
قبل إنبلاج فجر الإسلام إعتبر العرب المشركون المرأة على أنها من الأملاك المنقولة أو المتوارثة ولا تعدو كونها وسيلة لإشباع الغرائز الجنسية. فلم يكن لها أي حق في الحياة اليومية للمجتمع وعانت من ويلات رؤية بناتها يؤدن أحياء.
وانتشرالإسلام ضمن هذه البيئة الإجتماعية وتكشفت تعاليم القرآن الكريم. وببساطة كان الأمر ذو تحولات جذرية، فالإسلام ينظر الى الرجل والمرأة على أنهما من ذات المنشأ وخلقا من ذات الروح. فقد حصر رسول الله (ص) هذه الوحدة الضرورية للرجل والمرأة في قوله: " المرأة نصف الرجل" مستوحيا هذا التشبيه من القرآن الكريم:
" هنّ لباس لكم وأنتم لباس لهن"
وبهذا حّدد النمط السلوكي للرجل المسلم تجاه زوجته وربطه بواجباته الدينية، كما يشدّد عليه رسول الله (ص) في حديثه: " أكمل المؤمنين إيمانا أحسنهم خلقا، وخيارهم خيارهم لنساءهم وحسنه".
فلا يوجد فرق بين الرجل والمرأة ضمن إطار علاقتهم مع الخالق. فكليهما له نفس الأجر لذات السلوك الورع، كما ينال كليهما نفس العقاب للسلوك السيء. وهذه الروح في المساواة تنعكس في أحكام الشريعة التي تنظر الى المرأة على أنها المكافيء الروحي والعقلي للرجل. أما الفرق الذي تنص عليه أحكام الشريعة بينهما فمبني على تقسيم العمل، فقد خصصت الأعمال التي تتطلب الجهد الجسدي الى الرجل وزادت من مسؤولياته نحو رعاية الأسرة. أما الإدارة المنزلية وتربية الأطفال وإنشاؤهم ليكونوا أعضاء فاعلين وأصحاء في المجتمع فقد أعطيت الى المرأة. وبهذا نخلص الى أن المرأة تحتل قمة الهرم في الإحترام والقمة في كل من ينطلي تحت إمرتها.
والمرأة في الإسلام لها شخصيتها المستقلة تماما، ولها حرية التعاقد أوالوصاية بإسمها، وحرية إختيار زوجها وأن ترثيصفتها الزوجة أو الأخت أو الأم أو الإبنة.
فالرجل المسلم والمرأة المسلمة ينظرا الى أدوار المرأة كجزء من واجباتهما الدينية. فلا تفرق التعاليم القرآنية بينهما في أمور الحياة اليومية. إلا أنها الأفكار الغربية المتعلقة بتحرر المرأة والتي تنظر الى الأمور على أنها تجاوزت المنطق والتفهم العقلاني، كما وتنظر الى الأمور على أنها ببساطة استغلال النساء لأهداف تجارية.
