Source text - English Various agencies in the Northwest Territories have undergone numerous water quality sampling programs since 1960, with augmentation in the early 1990s because of the Arctic Environmental Strategy and Canada Water Act funding (neither of these funding sources exist today). The following document outlines many of the sampling networks and includes a table of the sites sampled and parameters tested. It is expected that this is not a complete listing of all programs that have occurred. Because of the number of agencies conducting research and the absence of a central database, it is difficult to determine who or where all of the available information may be. Also, because of extremely short field seasons, and limited access, many of the programs consist of single samples collected to gather baseline data, rather than multiyear projects. Further, it is the opinion of staff in the NWT that lack of augmented funding is threatening all work in the North. There are few staff (eg one person in Environment Canada for all the NWT and Nunavut) and scant funding. It is feared that soon the only remaining water quality work in the North will be some cost recovery work with Parks, DFO, Alberta Environment and DIAND and a few stations located around the Mackenzie River (the 12th largest river in the world with more flow than the St. Lawrence Great Lakes), and the 9th and 10th largest lakes in the World (Great Bear & Great Slave Lakes). Together these waterbodies, and lesser waterbodies of NWT and Nunavut, represent several percent of the World’s freshwater supply. The NWT and Nunavut represent 40% of Canada’s landmass.
Translation - French Depuis 1960, plusieurs organismes des Territoires du Nord Ouest ont réalisé un nombre élevé de programmes d’échantillonnage de la qualité de l’eau. Avec le début des années 1990, ces programmes ont connu une augmentation en raison du financement obtenu par l’intermédiaire de la Stratégie pour l’environnement arctique et la Loi sur les ressources en eau du Canada (notez que ces sources de financement ne sont plus disponibles). Le présent document décrit plusieurs des réseaux d’échantillonnage et comprend un tableau des sites ayant fait l’objet de prélèvements, y compris les paramètres étudiés. On ne doit pas s’attendre à une liste complète de tous les programmes réalisés. En effet, en raison du nombre d’organismes poursuivant des recherches et de l’absence d’une base de données centrale, il est difficile de déterminer le type ou le lieu où se trouve l’information disponible. En outre, en raison de l’accès limité et des campagnes extrêmement courtes sur le terrain, plusieurs des programmes consistent en de simples prélèvements d’échantillons pour des données de base et non en des projets étendus sur plusieurs années. De plus, de l’avis du personnel des organismes des T.N.-O., le manque de nouveau financement menace l’ensemble du travail entrepris dans le Nord. Peu de personnel n’y est affecté (une seule personne d’Environnement Canada couvre tous les T.N.-O. et le Nunavut) et le financement est limité. On craint bientôt que les seuls travaux sur la qualité de l’eau qui resteront en œuvre dans le Nord seront ceux comportant des frais recouvrables par Parcs Canada, le MPO, Environnement Alberta et le MAINC. Les quelques stations qui pourraient rester actives sont celles situées près du fleuve Mackenzie (le 12e plus grand fleuve au monde avec un débit plus important que celui du Saint Laurent et des Grands Lacs), du lac Great Bear et du Grand lac des Esclaves (respectivement les 9e et 10e plus grands lacs au monde). Ces lacs avec, dans une moindre mesure, les autres cours d’eau des T.N.-O. et du Nunavut, représentent une immense proportion de la disponibilité en eau douce mondiale. Les T.N.-O. et le Nunavut représentent 40 % du territoire canadien.
