Argentine Refinery - opened in 1889 - was located in the north suburbs of Rosario, where now Islas Malvinas neibourghood is. Because of its large proportions, people of the area called it “The factory”. It represented progress and it was a small town itself. It had 1000 workers - men, women and children - who worked there twelve hours a day.
Women and anarchism
The symbol of the oppressed
The matter of women was one of the most significant topics of anarchist propaganda. They were called to be part of the workers movement and also to organise themselves in trade unions to defend their rights. The intention was that women got information about the situation and became aware of their own role in society. Anarchists rejected the idea that women were often regarded at inferior.
Anarchism attacked prostitution and marriage, as elements which society had created to oppress women. Anarchists believed women were obliged to prostitute themselves because of poverty and unemployment imposed by bourgeoisie, or to get married under unfair laws dictated by the government. Anarchists believed that the union of two human beings had to be based on love, harmony and freedom.
