Source text - English The Dagger and The Teacup
Smokey coffee house in Istanbul.
Insaf, sits with his next victim.
The vizier’s go-to assassin, he takes a perverse pleasure in taking his targets for tea before taking their lives. Today he sits with a troublesome minister - spectacled and earnest.
Insaf converses like a maestro, candid, lucid, suddenly passionate about this or that when his secret smile surges through his body, gesticulating its way through his slender limbs. He’s past his peak, but when he speaks there’s still that flavoured charm.
Long bored of hands dirtied, blood on jewels or rolling sleeves up - he still carries the dagger, but kills them with the teacup. Slow seeping poison laced into porcelain cup with a magician’s sleight of hand. Then cup placed in cup holder that can’t help but attract attention.
“You like it? Swiss made. Costs a fortune, fell into my hands as they say. Please – why don’t you drink from it…”
Receptacle swiftly prepared, he spins a final yarn when something boils over at the door, interrupts his sugared flow.
A mad toothless fakir comes in ranting - points finger at the guileful killer and launches a tirade vivid and nightmarish. “A snakesin ghoul! Corrupt! Opulent and murderous! Justice! Justice! Keep your distance! His blade opens lungs and letters, shimmering inky hard!!”
Words wasted like the rubies chipped to fit the teacup’s frame. Insaf arches eyebrow, smiles, tilts his head and calms his prey. “A local layabout - he hates me ever since I had him arrested for begging, I should have never lobbied to have the wretch released. Thankless!”
He lifts a cup to his lips and nods. The stray is dragged out, grinning madly. He settles back into his seat and brews a warming tone “Sorry, where were we?”
The timid minister replies, “You were just about to let me try tea in your ornate cup - but look, you’ve just drank it all! Pour another why don’t you?”
Staring now, in silence, at the empty gem-clad vessel, he slowly licks the viscous dregs from his long-rotting teeth. Feels caffeine’s false quickening and rubies in his hand. Insaf looks down and grins at his sparkling, deadly waste.
Dr Oliver Watson, curator of the collection, explained to me that the dagger is from the Ottoman Empire’s peak, whereas the teacup is dated to a period of it’s irreversible decline.
Translation - Arabic الخنجر وقدح الشاي
مقهى دخاني في اسطنبول.
إنصاف، يجلس مع ضحيته القادمة.
الوزير الذي سيقتله لاحقا، فهو يستمتع، على قدر انحرافه، بأخذ أهدافه لتناول الشاي قبل أخذه لأرواحهم. إنه يجلس اليوم مع وزير مثير للمتاعب، معروف، وجاد.
يدير إنصاف أحاديثه مثل مايسترو، فيكون صريحا، وواضحا، ويصبح عاطفيا فجأة حين يتحدث عن هذا أو ذاك، فيما تعصف ابتسامته السرية داخل جسده، وتدغدغ طريقها من خلال أطراف جسده الرفيعة. لقد تخطى ذروته، ولكنه عندما يتحدث، لازال يرن في حديثه ذلك السحر الذي يحمل نكهتها.
ولطول ملله من الأيدي الملطخة، والدم على المجوهرات، والأكمام المشمرة- رغم أنه لا يزال يحمل الخنجر، إلا أنه يقتل ضحاياه بقدح الشاي. يسرب السم البطيء إلى مكنونات القدح الخزفية بخفة يد ساحر. ثم توضع القدح في حاملة أقداح كل ما فيها يجذب الانتباه.
"أيعجبك؟ إنه مصنوع في سويسرا. إنه لا يقدر بثمن، وقع في يدي كما يقولون.
رجاء تفضل- لم لا تشرب فيه..."
وعاء أعد بسرعة، وفيما كان يدير غزله النهائي، بدأ أمر ما بالغليان عند الباب، مقاطعا سيرورة فعلته المعسولة.
يدخل فقير غاضب بلا أسنان وهو يصرخ - مشيرا بإصبعه نحو القاتل الماكر، وينطلق في خطبة عصماء، حية وكابوسية. "أيها الغول الملتف على كنه أفعى! أيها الفاسد! أيها الغني القاتل! إنه وقت العدالة! إنه وقت العدالة! ابتعد! تفتح شفرته الرئتين والأحرف، بوميض له صلابة كالحبر!
تضيع الكلمات مثل الياقوت الذي يتناسق مع إطار القدح. يبتسم إنصاف، بحاجبيه المتقوسين، يميل برأسه ويهدئ فريسته. "مجرد حاقد من العامة- يكرهني منذ قبضت عليه بسبب التسول، ما كان علي أبدا أن أضغط على المسؤولين من أجل الإفراج عن هذا البائس. ياله من ناكر للجميل! "
يرفع قدحا إلى شفتيه ويومئ برأسه. يتم سحب الرجل الضالة إلى الخارج، وهو يبتسم بجنون. يريح جلسته مجددا في مقعده ويهيئ لهجة مرحبة "عفوا، أين كنا؟"
يرد الوزير وقد ناله الخجل، "كنت على وشك أن تسمح لي بتجربة الشاي في قدحك المزخرف- ولكن أنظر، لقد شربت كل ما فيه! ألا تصب لنفسك كأسا آخر؟ فلتفعل!
أصبح يحدق الآن، صامتا، في الإناء المرصع بالجواهر وقد أصبح فارغا، وبدأ يلثم بقايا الشاي عن أسنانه الطويلة التي نال منها العفن ما ناله. وفيما بدأ إنصاف يستشعر تسارع الكافائين المكذوب، والياقوت في يده، نظر إلى أسفل، مبتسما لرؤية لمعان بقاياه المميتة.
أوضح الدكتور أوليفر واتسون، القيم على المجموعة، أن الخنجر يعود لفترة ذروة الامبراطورية العثمانية، في حين يعود تأريخ القدح إلى فترة من فترات نهايتها التي لا رجعة فيها.
