I live with my parents. | | |
Or to put it another way, it owns me. It's a cute house in a wooded area.

We finished paying it off when I inherited some money. Just in time to start funding the kids' university years. I think buying it was a pretty smart move, we need never pay rent or mortgage instalments again. | | | neilmac Spain Local time: 14:09 Spanish to English + ... I prefer to rent | Jan 5, 2017 |
My family has always rented. With any luck, when I get back to Spain tomorrow, my landlord will have concreted the driveway and fixed some small electrical installations - and it won't cost me anything. If I owned the place, I'd be out of pocket at least a grand... However, if I find that I've become a millionaire in the Christmas lottery, I'll gladly buy the house from him for cash. I just wouldn't fancy living with the Damoclean prospect of a mortgage hanging over me for decades.<... See more My family has always rented. I love my cute apartment, with enough space for a separate office, in the middle of a suburb to Copenhagen. And when something breaks down I call the building manager at no cost. No ambitions to have my own house. | | | B D Finch France Local time: 14:09 French to English + ...

The potential pool of responders also live in different countries, with different levels of home-ownership and where home ownership has different implications. Bangladesh has over 90% home ownership, while Switzerland has 44.5%, yet renting a flat in Geneva tends to imply a higher standard of living than owning a detached house in the Bangladesh countryside. Security of tenure also influences attitudes to renting and incentives to buy. Of course, if this is just seen as a bit of fun, to get people involved and interacting with the website, the above doesn't really matter.

[Edited at 2017-01-05 10:44 GMT] Ye-es, but I'm struggling to see why home ownership (or not) should correlate with wealth or extreme privacy concerns??? FWIW we own our home because it's much cheaper than renting. Deposit, upgrades, maintenance and mortgage all funded exclusively by the spoils of translation. Without working evenings and weekends. Or using CAT tools.

I’m strongly in the “I prefer to rent” camp. I had to sell our home when my second husband died and that left some “scars”. Being a single mother of 3 kids I thought that the money I earned would be better spent on travel and education. Though I have had for some time now the financial comfort to buy an apartment (I have been helping my two daughters pay their mortgages) personally I don’t want to be tied up into a mortgage and the responsibilities of owning my home. Though I have had for some time now the financial comfort to buy an apartment (I have been helping my two daughters pay their mortgages) personally I don’t want to be tied up into a mortgage and the responsibilities of owning my home. I live in a beautiful new apartment located in the center of Lisbon close to everything but on a quiet street, near the largest park in the city. If one day I win the lottery I would buy the perfect villa on a tucked away beach on the Alentejo Coast, but I wouldn’t leave this apartment...

I will pay the mortgage off in three years, God willing and the creek don't rise. Thirty-six months. Yep. I'm that close. And then I'm breaking out the champagne...and starting to save for that luxury cruise I've been dreaming of. | | | Joint ownership with my husband | Jan 5, 2017 |
It was the only practical option when we moved here. We have seen rented housing that costs the same as paying off a mortgage, or even more, for the same type of property. It varies a lot across the country - rented housing is more popular and often makes better sense in the big towns. | |

We want to buy a house, but where we live, they cost about €600,000 for a decent size house with office and a "small" garden whereas if we were living in the North of Germany you could get a stately home for that. Yes, I know that home owner (2 words) is British versus homeowner, 1 word, which is American. I've been mulling over this all morning. I've been thinking that home owner could be someone who owns something from home versus an absentee owner whereas a homeowner is someone who owns a home.
