No (not any more) Apr 4, 2017

From 2006 till 2015 I traveled a lot (at least once a month) between Brussels and Lisbon for family reasons and my time was split almost 50/50 (without my clients ever noticing any difference). Though this arrangement suited me fine work-wise, it also got a little tiresome at my age. That’s one of the reasons I decided in 2015 to move back to Lisbon.

Definately, if I did not have any commitments - Mortgage, children, wife, etc.

Looking forward to retiring, will start doing that then, just have to keep fit until then.

When I'm working, I want to have ALL the convenience of my own little 'cage', my own coffee-cup and my big screen and keyboard. Not forgetting the printer... There is just too much to hump around, although I can work when travelling if I plan carefully.

When I'm travelling, I simply don't have time to work. I travel to see the world, to see family, to get some fresh air and exercise... Of course there are moments when I can fit in small jobs, but I don't do my best work when travell

It would depend on Apr 4, 2017

If I could afford it financially, I suppose I would do a bit of travelling. I'd avoid the US nowadays though, as it just seems too much bother (the last time my venerable mother went, she was almost detained upon arrival for refusing to hand over a cucumber sandwich she'd made for the trip). Other than cash, Wi-Fi reception in the destination locations would be the only drawback I can think of right now.

PS: A couple of years ago, I was thinking of visiting the Great Barrier Reef, but Australia is also out of bounds for me too. The Visa requirements were just too stringent, too many hoops to jump through for a two-week vacation, more bother than they are worth.

Good grief, no Apr 4, 2017

Why would I want to go anywhere else now that we've made Britain great again?

Been there, done that Apr 4, 2017

Like Teresa, not any more. In the pre-Internet years I managed to visit 35 countries, mostly connected with my work for international organizations (translating, reviewing, or précis writing at conferences, attending terminology coordination meetings, consulting with other organizations, giving talks and seminars, etc.).

Now travel takes a lot out of me and I'm much happier sticking close to home. I am very attached to my working space.

I did a lot of travel in my younger days and also lived abroad for many years, in Canada, the USA, the UK and Thailand in particular.

But now I have 2 dogs and 2 cats so have to pay for kennels any time I want to travel so don't go away for too long. So no, I did think of moving to France a few years ago but I still have a mortgage to pay off here so it would be expensive and too much hassle.

I love to travel though and still have places to see on my bucket list. I go to quite a few conferences these days as that way I get to see a place in the company of locals and can also claim expenses on my taxes (including kenneling costs). I always add on extra days for sightseeing as well, especially if I've never been there before.

So, last year I went to a conference in Barcelona in February and spent a week there and in October went to San Francisco (ATA) for 6 days and with an extra 4-day trip to see an old friend in LA. This year I went to Berlin for a week in February and am in Cardiff in May for the ITI and will probably go somewhere else in September/October.

I usually just bring a small laptop with me for urgent work on these trips but otherwise see them as a break from humdrum routine.

But if I were young and carefree I would definitely just head off with my laptop and backpack!

Travel, yes. Work, no. Why go through the tremendous hassle of getting a visa, tickets and accommodation just to do the same things you do anyway at home? What's the point of leaving the familiar if you're just going to hack away at your laptop regardless? A big no from me.

Working while travelling is overrated - you end up with the short stick on both ends Apr 4, 2017

I travel about 2-2,5 months every year and have to work at least half the time I'm away from my office. And I have to say, as with all multitasking, it's not all it's cracked up to be.
The ergonomics of a travelling office -is usually way below the level at home. And I always feel I miss out on things I could have done instead of working.
The only exception is when I visit my parents. A big assignment between my mother and I helps her keep her safety distance, and we're both better

Imagine how beautiful it would be to see a different city (and live it) every 3/4 months....

I love to travel and, yes, to work while enjoying the sights and sounds of this beautiful planet. A well equipped laptop makes it possible.

Working on it Apr 4, 2017

Increasing the amount of travel progressively. Obstacles: a husband who does not speak any foreign language and is unhappy in "foreign parts", a dog not trained enough to be taken along, and a garden that needs tending.

I do Apr 4, 2017

...But it's not tourism-like travel, it's more like a nomadic lifestyle: repeatedly moving along a steady circuit that is slowly evolving from year to year - new countries included, old ones abandoned.
