Though I have to say, a genealogist I know used it for hundreds of pages of text he was reviewing and the results were not bad.

I also use the Facebook translation program for languages I don't know, mainly Norwegian and Arabic. It's useful about half the time.

The only use I give to Google Translate is when I receive messages from a client in a language I don’t master: I have a German client who keeps forgetting that my German is very limited. Otherwise, I wouldn’t dream of using Google Translate. I fell in love with translation many moons ago and I'm hoping that by keeping my brain active, I will keep Alzheimer's at bay!

One of the tools I use as a translator is GT4T. It's not a panacea and won't make a good translator out of an inept one, but properly leveraged, it can be a helpful addition to your arsenal. I also use Dragon instead of typing all the time, but I don't think that makes me somehow inferior to skilled typists.

The issue with automatic translation is more about misuse rather than judiciously aplied use IMHO. In the hands of the unwary, it can lead to disaster.

I used to depend on it Oct 6, 2018

I used to depend on it in translating entire paragraphs in the past but when I knew that there are privacy issues in such matter, i use it in translating words only.

It's not something to rely on but it happens from time time that a word just slips your brain, even in your native language. Besides, I use the pronounceation function when Forvo can't help.

Occasionally for Inspiration Oct 6, 2018

I use Google Translate occasionally but only for word inspiration, for example, when a word that I know is stuck on the tip if my tongue and I just can't remember the exact word, Google Translate is usually helpful in releasing the block haha
But I don't use it to actually translate a whole sentence.

I use it in case of badly translated source texts Oct 6, 2018

Every once in a while you will come across a source text that is already a translation. And possibly not the best quality translation. So if I find an 'odd' word in a sentence that doesn't seem quite right (or just simply doesn't make sense at all), I like to use Google Translate to translate the word back and forth to the original language, hunting for other possible English translations of the word, trying to figure out the original mistranslation..... I also use it sometimes for transcriptions of originally non Latin script words/names when I'm in a hurry.

I have never seen a client ask for it and I don't trust it anyway.

Not for work, but I occasionally want to understand something from the internet that is in a language I can't read. Sometimes Google/Facebook Translate is good enough to give me a general idea, sometimes it is just plain gibberish, and sometimes I suspect it's a bad mistranslation. It's okay for jokes and meme captions, but I wouldn't use it for anything of any consequence.

Use as suggestions Oct 6, 2018

I have the API for Google translate and the API for Microsoft translate working with Memoq. When I arrive at a segment, I am shown suggestions from TM and the two translation utilities. Sometimes this is very helpful.

No, and I won't admit it Oct 7, 2018

Google Translate is excellent for several purposes, but certainly not for professional translations. I've led several groups of translators as PM, and I have learned to discard anyone who uses GT for professional purposes immediately. They are very easily identified, as the quality of their translations is way inferior to the others.

I work in patents Oct 7, 2018

I get paid to actually translate the patents that are run through google translate.
So, I do look at google patents to see what the hell it is that I'm fixing.

Never have, never will use anything related to Google because I value my privacy.
