It never crossed my mind! Actually if we reason like this does it mean that clients who pay promptly are feminists? I have a few clients who pay the day after my invoice is received but I don’t think they are vowed to achieve gender equality, they are just good payers…

I can imagine that someone somewhere is thinking (maybe even unconsciously) "we can pay her later, she's just a girl/woman...". But I don't think it's widespread, at least not among my clients.

I don't usually have trouble receiving payments and the few times I've had it was mostly due to bad payment practices on the part of the client, I assume. I invoice in the name of my company, so people processing payments usually wouldn't know where it goes anyway unless they're the same who have been in touch with me about jobs. I find it hard to imagine anybody would select payments based on the gender of beneficiary instead of amount or due date, although anything is possible. If... I find it hard to imagine anybody would select payments based on the gender of beneficiary instead of amount or due date, although anything is possible. If there is any gender discrimination it's rather in selecting translators and negotiating rates, but then again I wouldn't know because nobody has ever said my rates are too high for a woman, they just don't pick me or try to get lower rates. I probably receive more offers related to beauty products than technical translations, but I also don't work in those fields, so again – I wouldn't know. ▲ Collapse

Please, let us not create a new type of client segmentation... Let us stick with the simple "good payer"/"bad payer" distinction, as mentioned by Teresa ... Really!
Pesos vs. Libras (Sterling) | Oct 11, 2018 |
Yes, I think there is a male discrimination. As far as I have been told, invoices in Sterling (female noun in Spanish) are often paid sooner than invoices in Pesos (male noun in Spanish). Good luck!

The majority of the clients/PMs I have dealt with have been women and I've never felt I've been treated any differently because I am a man, the idea of that happening would never occur to me. I did get one (male) client approach me asking me to do sports translations once though even though that's not listed anywhere in my profile, but that's probably more to do with the fact my profile picture was taken in a stadium than anything to do with my gender per se.
Most of them don't even practise quality discrimination

I do not have even anecdotal evidence to go on here, but I can well imagine agencies adopting the attitude that Neilmac has indicated and, on the other side, women being more inclined to be gentle and diplomatic in dealing with delinquent payers. This dynamic could plausibly create a feedback loop leading to discrimination against women in terms of prioritizing payments. After all, it is only human nature to first placate those who are most likely to cause one problems....

Some countries suffer with social or sexual discrimination and it is inevitably reflected into thoughts of the people who work in that area. Being persistent and pushy is the only key to receiving payment and everyone know female human being is less good at yelling or the proud sort of speaking - you are being licked. I have used three platforms including ProZ so far, and ProZ was the only one who generated serious non payment issue. Maybe it is just the number of agencies are large but maybe ProZ staff is being too generous to non-payers. Clients from the other two pays on time, it is always ProZ agency who ignore invoice and email reminder. What I hate the most is I have to yell instead of being polite and calm because of ProZ agency.

I don't even know where I would start trying to figure this out. I do the job; I send in the invoice; they send me the money according to the terms we have agreed upon, usually 30 days from invoice. I'm not sure how getting paid according to an industry standard would vary depending on my gender or the clients'.
