Also, it seems to me that the "gender agenda" is trying to find its way here at Proz, and apparently, with the usual lack of sensitiveness that characterises it... Just a thought... Very poor taste... Not funny...

There is a STRONG gender bias. Statistical data for past 50 years shows that almost no or very few translators of the third, or "X" gender, were given technical translation tasks.
That's an appalling gender discrimination!

I recall Nicole's posts here on Proz, but only today I learned that she has left us.
Checked her record on Proz, it says that she "has recently passed away". giving no clue on how recently it was, no date. I think it would make sense to include (XXXX-YYYY) birth and death years as it is customary anywhere.

It merely states that the text was written by a practitioner of some specialized profession and intended FOR practitioners of the same or closely related professions.
A "technical" translator, say, in mechanics like me, would be a babe in the woods translating equally "technical" material in, say, medicine (which BTW I don't). My preferred medical translation specialists - to whom I divert all such requests I get - have a really hard time translating technical material in other areas.
There could be a gender bias in terms of different writing styles usually adopted by men and women, but I think it's more a personality trait than a gender-specific one. So gender is not a reliable criterion to use here.
My example is one not too close friend of mine, a woman. Whenever I read something she wrote, I get the strange feeling - from the writing style - that I wrote it myself, though I know that I never wrote that. She is not a translator, but a consultant in creativity; in fact I've done some translation work for her (though we share three or four languages that both of us speak). What do we have in common? Same age, birthplace, height, and religion. Nothing else! Yet an outsider wouldn't be able to positively state which of us wrote any given piece of text.

So many silly self-promoting poll questions are repeated and often answered by the same people year after year.

When I lived in Germany, there was definitely prejudice against women in technical professions (engineering etc.). Frau im Männerberuf (woman in a man's/male profession) was something I often heard. I can imagine Nicole wondered if this was also an issue for women who are technical translators.

The phrase “recently passed away” is also in other “In Memoriam” statements in profiles of persons who died some years ago.
Given that the “In Memoriam” statement is intended to stay on the deceased person’s profile forever, it should not include the phrase “[NAME] recently passed away" without qualification. Instead, the date of death should be provided. In cases in which date of death is unknown, the following formula could be used:
“On [MONTH - DATE, YEAR] we learned that [NAME] had recently passed away.”
If this posting had included acknowledgement that Nicole had died a few years ago, there would have been nothing wrong with it. As posted, I find it not merely in poor taste, but downright creepy.
