It‘s extremely variable: in December last year I only did 13 jobs, in June this year 26 so far. In general, the number of jobs in a month depends a great deal on the number of words each job has: the longer, the fewer…

There are big jobs and little jobs. If you have a big job, you'll do few in a month. If you get a passle of little jobs, you'll do a whole bunch of them. The word count might be quite similar on a "many little jobs month" as on a "a few big jobs" month.

This consistent average shows that I don't run a word factory: If I could stamp words and sell them by the pallet, I'd have levied cash to buy bigger, more powerful word-stamping machines, streamlined industrial processes, increased my output and likely offered volume discounts to get rid of my stock when sales are slow: 4 pallets for the price of 3 if cash on delivery.

Between 70 and 90 Jun 26, 2019

If we define a "job" as a request with a deadline (in other words, several requests from the same client, all with the same deadline, is 1 job, but 10 requests from the same client, on successive days, each with its own deadline, are 10 jobs) (and if we count staggered-delivery jobs as 1 job even though there may be multiple deadlines), then during 2017 and 2018 I had between 70 and 90 jobs per month:

* 2017: Jan _81, Feb _80, Mar 106, Apr 107, May 87, Jun 121, Jul 57, Aug 94, Sep 98, Oct 95, Nov 111, Dec 94
* 2018: Jan 116, Feb 138, Mar 125, Apr _81, May 79, Jun _65, Jul 75, Aug 40, Sep 48, Oct 33, Nov _39, Dec 38

I know we're not supposed to talk about money, but I think we'll get a better idea of "job" (for comparison purposes) if we know the average value of "job". In my case, it's between €45 and €55 per job.

My jobs come in all sizes, some have 20,000 words and some only 20. Some agencies have set up platforms where I can do many small translations without much hassle, often it's only that one missing string for a longer software project or tech manual. In a normal month, I do hundreds of these smaller assignments. (And this is also the reason why I do not maintain a complete register of all big and small jobs every month, as was asked in the last poll - it simply is not worth the effort.)

Looks like I'll be issuing 11 bills at the end of this month, although three of those will be for agencies who ask me to bung all jobs completed this month on to the one bill, so I'll have done more jobs than that. Probably 18 or 19. It feels like a pretty typical month.

Lately I do fewer jobs of a higher word count. It’s great on one hand. I personally think it’s easier to keep going on a larger job then familiarize myself with several smaller jobs. The only downfall is when the client drags out payment. At this moment between the Spring and Summer season, the majority of earnings by Mediterranean firms will take place in the next few months. Lately I do fewer jobs of a higher word count. It’s great on one hand. I personally think it’s easier to keep going on a larger job then familiarize myself with several smaller jobs. Believe it or not, I am waiting to be paid for jobs completed in May. (Conclusion: 3 months savings is essential in this business!) In this case, smaller jobs can be a lifesaver for covering ongoing expenses until the more impressive clients actually pay up.Collapse

I rarely do short jobs. They tend to range between 10,000 and 50,000 words.
