Assumption erroneous May 8, 2021

Maybe I'm just too stupid, but the assumption implicit in the question makes it difficult for me to tick any of the boxes available. I translate mainly from Spanish to English and I live in Spain.

12 months / year :) May 8, 2021

I work with three language pairs (German, English and Spanish into Italian), and I am living in Germany, so I practice all 3 languages (mostly German and English) every day thanks to the international environment in the office I work in.

Assumption erronous (thanks Neil) May 8, 2021

I translate from English, French, Italian and Spanish into European Portuguese. I moved back to my home country in 2016 after living abroad for 30 years.

I go home to speak my native language May 8, 2021

I live where my source language is spoken, but my target language is definitely a working language.

Of course that is not the only reason why I spend several weeks in the UK every time I can manage it, but I listen, read and watch TV with professional ears and eyes while I am there.

Everything is changing so fast May 8, 2021

In this past pandemic year, I never left my tiny state in the U.S., and of course, I could not travel across the nearby border with Quebec to visit friends and family and refresh my French.

As for Spanish, in the pre-Covid days, we managed to spend from one to three months in Central or South America every year. Of course, back then, (it seems so long ago), I could work full time while on the road. I would find an Internet connection, and the agency would send me a document. I could

I could work on it off-line for the rest of the day, and then find a connection to do any necessary research and return the finished translation.

Now however, I am receiving more and more work that requires me to use agency on-line platforms. If I want to work, I have to remain tethered to the Internet all day. This works fine from my home office, but it doesn't give me the option of retreating to a fascinating or beautiful off-line nook and putting in my hours from there.

3 Weeks, Every Few Years Or So May 8, 2021

During those times, I've been obliged to speak Italian, Spanish, and French (which was contaminated by Italian the last time, because I had just come to Paris from Rome). But I have found that many of the colleagues and clients who have hosted me across the pond often prefer to practice the English they have learned, or if it is their original tongue, which they have mostly abandoned after living in Europe for many years.

None, since 1986. May 10, 2021

I've done a lot of that between 1979 and 1986. Never after that. Of course I've travelled abroad many times after that, but language was not even close to being part of the purpose of any such trips.
However, please note this is absolutely unnecessary. It may be very helpful, but not necessary at all.
