I can understand polls on the number of words you can translate a day, timetables, source of income or clients, resources, CAT tools etc...etc.... but what on earth has the number of children (or lack of them) got to do with translating?

Maybe someone's wondering whether anyone can cope with having children at home and working as a translator at the same time? From the results, you wouldn't think the two things are that compatible, and yet who knows.

This can be one reason for this single poll. In order to determine if e.g. the number of kids in your hosuehold affects your professional effiency, or maybe finding out if divorced female translators in Russia not older than 30 yrs earn less than a married male translator in Singapore aged 65+ yrs, I think it's about time to carry out a survey with several questions.
Statistics really don't say anything if you just ask one single question.

Have you ever been working at home while your children were playing cheerfully (=noisily) in another room? Or better, have you ever tried to translate a single page with coming back from school and screeming they're hungry, had a class test, a row with their best friend etc.? Something they need to tell you the moment they open the door?
Just use your imagination and you'll know what the author meant.

When they grew older they are still your children, but are supposed to be less noisy and not to interfere so much with your translation work (well, I do not know, really... they still come and interrupt you very often with a lot of requirements!). To me that's the other side of the coin: you translate, you work hard, but your children don't seem to get that you're really working. Three comments:
1. Roberto, at the bottom of every forum page it clearly states that there is no moderator assigned to the forum; one may be called if needed.
2. Do all polls have to be deadly serious? Some can be just for fun, or to satisfy curiosity. I find this poll "legitimate," because children at home strongly affect the work situation of any freelance, work-from-home professional; but even if the poll were totally frivolous, I wouldn't mind, for a change.
3. Will I have wet pasta, rotten tomatoes, and nasty epithets thrown at me if I mention that the only two who don't seem to "get it" are male? ;-/

Yes, i was alone with my son in the past year, and I know other fathers to, who do this.
I tell you, it was really hard to focus on my work, to deliver at time and the same time to take car of my son.

You can only prevent this, if you agree to go out to the playground or wherever with my 11 months old girl, so that I can finish my job within the deadline and still have some hours that I can spend with my wife.

Of course, kissing your feet will be easy. I will be ducking the wet pasta, rotten tomatoes, and nasty epithets.
Seriously, I respect and honor all translators (or other free-lancers), male or female, who are dedicated parents while practicing their profession. I didn't go pro until my baby graduated from high school.
Oh, and Siegfried, when I take your little girl to the playground, may I take my grandkids too?
