what are "other reasons"? Oct 12, 2005

Although I am not the organizer of this event, I would be interested to know what are the "other reasons" for not attending.

I would like to attend one some day Oct 12, 2005

For the moment I've got two main reasons not to go and that's why I voted "other reasons".

I consider the expenses value high but this has algo got to do with the main reason why I don't go. I'm expecting my baby for the month of November. I terminate the 40 weeks on November 17th and my baby boy can be born 15 days earlier or 15 days later. No travel company would let me travel, anyway. :0)

Even though he'll be born early in November, it's not possible for me to go.... See more

I live in an occupied country, and our borders will be closed for the next 6-8 months. Not to mention that even if the borders got opened, I may or not may not be allowed to travel

How about that

Arrangements for the children Oct 12, 2005

I was planning on going but unfortunately I could not find a person who would look after my children for the duration. My husband is on a business trip at the time.

Regional rotation as a solution Oct 12, 2005

Some reasons will always be predetermined. There's visa requirements in some cases (why else not the USA). Even Buenos Aires 2006 will have its conditioning clauses (some nationals need visas - the current list was facilitated in the Spanish forum) and its advantages (open to the nationals of all neighbouring countries, who may not have access elsewhere). And these conditioning factors - which include varying demands in terms of travel expenses - will always exist elsewhere, so it really would be good to rotate.

I would LOVE to go but.... Oct 12, 2005

I'd love to go, but a)the ATA conference in Seattle November 9-12 wil already take a big bite out of my wallet, and b) my cat has lymphoma sarcoma, and I can not bear to be away from my Saskia any longer than needed, because she is not going to be around much longer.

DO hope to go next year -- Buenos Aires, right?!

Kids... Oct 12, 2005

I voted for "other reasons" because I cannot travel as much as I would like to - my kids have to be looked after...
Besides I hardly have time to breathe with lots of activities (and daily life) going on.

Regards
Antje
(hoping for conferences to come)

Kids Oct 12, 2005

I have three children and the fourth is expected for Dec. 12th. I might attend one in Paris one day, or I will have to wait for the children to be grown up!

Move Oct 12, 2005

Hi,

I was at the last conference in Oxford and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I definitely wanted to attend this one, but we are moving to a different county in the UK right before the time of the conference and I don't think I will be organized enough in the new place to be able to take a couple of days off.

I will definitely attend the nex conference - if it is not too far away!

Arianna

US holiday Oct 12, 2005

I voted for "other reasons" as well. Nov. 24 is Thanksgiving Day, the second most-celebrated holiday in the US. Everyone gathers with family, even crossing the country to do so, and no one works on Friday the 25 either, and the partying goes on through the weekend. I've got 11 siblings, and my wife has 9, and this time of year is about *the* only time of year we get to see the rest of the family.

other reasons Oct 12, 2005

I, too, cannot find a way for someone to look after my children.
Best of luck everyone, I'm sure the Krakow event will be very worthwile.
Best regards,
Saskia

Due to holidays/vacation Oct 12, 2005

Unfortunately, I booked my "winter sun" escape just the week before the Conference and as such will not be able to attend (i.e. taking additional time out of the office). However, I would like to attend the 4th Conference next year.

Strictly the money, honey! Oct 12, 2005

I would love to go, but if I can't afford to go Platinum (yet!) I certainly can't travel to Europe with no more excuse than a 2-day conference! I'm thinking about Buenos Aires. Chicago would be nice (that's where my kids & grandkids live)!

I fully understand and agree with the rationale for holding most conferences outside the U.S., though. Hope you all have a wonderful time!
