Do you wait for the payment to clear before releasing the translation, or does this tend to turn the fledgling relationship sour?

Method of payment depends on client's location, not on meeting place.
I think that the client needs the payment method to be simple, as close as possible to what he prefers and usually uses. If it's too complicated, risky or expensive he'll look for another service provider.
The currency must be one he's used too, and the service provider must try to put himself in client's position too.

In the US and Canada people like checks too, wire transfers sound complicated, but they use PayPal.
This comments are according to my own experience.
I tried to be able to offer as many payment methods as possible, if you can receive euros and dollars via transfer or check in accounts in that currency it's already a great point. If you add PayPal or Moneybookrs (that I haven't tried) it allows to receive immediate payments, which is good (although they don't offer their services in many countries).
So, my answer is any of them except money order and Moneybookers.

I recently used Moneybookers for the first time to make a payment to a translator in Poland. I have used PayPal in the past. I like PayPal a lot, but the verdict is still out on Moneybookers. I received my bank statement and there were some extra charges that have yet to be clarified. So I would appreciate any thoughts, suggestions or past experiences regarding sending money from the US to other parts of the world. This poll is the first time I've heard of Moneybookers. I'll find their webpage and read it; like Gloria, I would appreciate input from other ProZers. While PayPal is always my first choice for clients outside of Puerto Rico, I try to be open to whatever the client is accustomed to.

till about 2 years back, their charges used to amount to about 9.9% but it is even down to around 3%, so I normally add this percentage additionally quoting that the quoted price is FOB, and the transaction costs are to be borne by the outsourcer. Till sometime back Moneybookers was an option, as the payer is normally charged around 5%, but paypal is simply very widely used service, so ultimately they are bound to be cheaper. Further to this if you hold a business account unlike basic or premius... I depends on where the client is located. I have an account in Germany for European clients (wire transfer), and an account in the US, where checks are the norm.

I'd fully agree with Claudia on this one, based on my personal experience.
Paypal for payments anywhere outside of Europe.
Bank transfer within Europe - if you have a European bank account.
Being located in South America is, however, not easy if you depend on Paypal and don't have a US or UK bank account to withdraw funds to. ALSO - read PAYPAL fine print before you start, I didn't.

IKOBO and their I-KARD ATM card. I only wish more outsourcers would/could prefer this option for us here outside the USA/Europe. It would be a very convenient option for those of you who do not have a US/Europe based bank account too, as you can withdraw funds using the free(arguably) debit card they send you. Only problem I find - most outsourcers go for Paypal.

I sense an older-but-wiser anecdote here. Steven, would you mind sharing with us what's in PayPal's fine print that gave you trouble? I've been quite happy so far--had my id compromised once but I recognized a scam email and reported it, and all was clear in few hours.
