Missing option Nov 9, 2005

Once again, there is a missing option. What do our colleagues in Antartica tick?

Those in New Zealand, and the other South Pacific islands, have nothing to tick!

Very interesting results Nov 9, 2005

Great poll Sherefedin. I was aware that most of ProZ.com members were in Europe, but I am really surprised to see that over 70% of those who have cast their votes so far are from/in Europe. Let's see if the numbers will change dramatically, as the day just began here in this part of the world

when the sun is in the east, lazy people work like a beast Nov 9, 2005

I had to start working at 3 AM this morning (Central European Time = CET), because I'm very busy. It was really funny to see how the ratios changed around 9 AM CET.

I guess the new poll started at 0 am CET (in the America's between 2 PM and 9 PM local time) because before 9 AM most translators seem to be in the America's.
Like said, at 9 AM CET the ratios changed dramatically in the favour of the Occident.

We all are one! Nov 9, 2005

Dear colleagues from all over the world,

Since the very beginning of my membership I wondered where do we all come from.
Pushed by curiosity I proposed this poll. I didn't expect that Europe, so far, will be in the lead with about 70%.

It was not my intention to offend any of you by proposing only 6 possible answers. I hope that every user of Proz.com will find a way to make the best choice while answering the poll question.

It could be interesting if the Proz.com team decides to publish the official statistics of its members by continent (including not mentioned parts of the world) in order to see how reliable this kind of poll can be.

What can be the use of it?

May be more practical.
I would like to propose the Proz.com team to consider ways and means to involve more members from the less represented parts of the world in order to participate in this beautiful world of words and ideas.

another option-less over here... Nov 9, 2005

I believe every Mexican in Mexico would say they are in North America, but I also believe this notion is tricky... we are taught at school that our continent is divided in three grographic sections: North, Central, and South America, plus the Caribbean islands, and that Mexico is in North America. As far as I remember, Canadians and US-born people are taught that Mexico is in Central America... and some people in Europe consider everything south of the Rio Bravo South America.

Oh,

The Gringos are definitely taught that Mexico is in North America. However whether or not they remember is another story.....

People in Spain see the Americas as a single continent. Considering we see Europe and Asia as separate comments, I think it's ludicrous to see the Americas as a single continent.

In my opinion, Central America is just a political concept to mark the cultural differences between the USA and Mexico (in the same way that the Middle-East is often grouped with North Africa and Cyprus is always grouped with Europe), but from a geographic/geological point of view, most of what is called Central America is clearly part of North America.

I'm not sure what the Carribean would belong to from a geological point of view.

Imagine an alien flying around planet earth and looking down at planet earth. He understands the concept of a continent (a large mass of land), but knows nothing of the earth's politics. What continents would he see?

In my opinion he would see:

Eurasia
Africa
N America
S America
Australia
Antartica

He would probably also see the Artic as a continent, but we all know that the Artic is just the frozen sea.

One use that immediately springs to mind is that site downtime can be scheduled so as to cause least inconvenience to the largest proportion of users.

¿Soy norteamericana? Nov 10, 2005

Especially since in Mexico the usual adjective for estadunidense (American in the sense of "of the U.S.A") is "norteamericano" (i.e. "North American"). So where does that leave North Americans from countries other than the U.S.A.?

When asked by Mexicans if I am "norteamericana," it's hard to know what to say; yes I am North American, but not in the sense that you mean. So I answer neither "yes" nor "no," but rather "Soy canadiense" (I'm Canadian).

The poll is accurate Nov 10, 2005

The poll reflects the data we have on member locations.

Our traffic is high during the European working day, and we do schedule downtime accordingly.

We would like to reach more people in the Europe and more people in the rest of the world, we have some plans for doing that (localization) and would welcome other suggestions.

Well, I'm an Illinois-born gringa who was taught that Mexico is in North America; my Mexican husband says it's in Central America. Now we live in Puerto Rico where I'm equally likely to get either answer if I ask around.
