Why? Jan 16, 2006

Does it really matter? This certainly should be a field of work where age doesn't matter - in fact, the older you get, the more experience you have under your belt!

Relax! Jan 16, 2006

There have already been so many different polls which were very far away from any business matters (e.g. polls about marital status, kids at home etc) so why shouldn't we allow this poll as well? After all, many ProZ polls aren't very scientific and more for fun or curiousity.

Why don't you relax and see this poll as a short break from daily routine? I don't see any reason for getting upset. After all, the poll doesn't imply that a younger translator would produce better work - tha

Where do all the translators go after 50? Jan 16, 2006

Well, I am rapidly approaching the age of fifty, and noticed that the number of translators suddenly drops after that age. I wonder where they all go.

Hi Tim,

I assume this is more related to Internet generations. How old were these translators when Internet was created? I am sure there are many translators above 50, but maybe a lot use the Internet on a need basis, so Proz.com is maybe out of their reach or not interesting enough. They have spent so many years without it...

I am sure this figure will increase in the future with you and me, although I am still 30.

Fred

I'm only 23. Don't tell me I'm the youngest in here.
Am I the baby of the whole Proz.com family?

go at 50?? Jan 16, 2006

I know some freelancers who hadn't 'arrived' until they were up in their forties - before that they were gathering experience in other jobs, or tranlsating 'in house'.

The Internet and Proz.com were not there either, just a very few years ago!

We've only just got here - and if this poll is repeated once a year, there will probably be some very interesting developments.

I'm 55, and my father, (still going strong on the Net, though not actively translating any more) got his first computer for his 80th birthday! The family were tired of trying to de-bug his hopelessly obsolete Word Processor, and he has never looked back!

Happy translating, folks!

Simple & Safe Jan 16, 2006

It so simple, safe and cute poll. It is obvious that most of us are at middle-ages. Personally, I know somebody, over 75 and already translating. So, 80 is also possible. But, age does not indicate experience proportionally at all times.

Well, since mathematics IS an exact science... Jan 16, 2006

It seems that more than half the ProZ family is UNDER 50... but it makes me wonder what you consider as 'middleaged'

hm! Maybe I shall create a poll asking that!

I find it a neat idea to have a poll on this subject, it is something I was wondering about for some time myself.

Hello to everyone,

I find it a neat idea to have a poll on this subject, it is something I was wondering about for some time myself.

Supposedly, in Canada, we are about to have a shortage of translators, as most of our translators are now around the age of 50, and many of them are about to "retire" - if such a thing exists in the field of translation

However, it is interesting to see how tranlators between 20 and 40 make up the absolute majority of us all, which contrasts with the Canadian data.

What I would be interested to know in particular is what are the differences by age group in the methods of working. As Fred earlier pointed out, the older the translators are, the less modern technology they probably use. Also, I would like to know whether translators with respectable experience - let's say 20 years and more - are more likely to have a higher esteem of themselves and their work than their less experienced counterparts. I am wondering, because I have seen some bad translations by translators with experience of a quarter of a century and in those cases, it seemed that the particular translator was so proud of their experience that they hardly did their terminology research anymore, thereby providing a bad translation. In other words, their pride got to their heads. I am of course not saying that the more experience we have, the less we assure quality, but it seems to me that this is a recurring problem. Any insight, anyone?

Cheers for this simple, yet interesting poll!

I'm 23 too and, being born at the end of the year, I'm likely to be younger than you!
