Depends on region... Mar 9, 2006

While this could be an interesting poll, I don't feel that it's very useful in its current form. One of the major factors that would have to be considered is the translator's location. You can't compare a translator making EUR 20 per hour in a country with a low cost of living with a translator making EUR 20 in a country with a high cost of living...

Just my EUR 0.02.

Still could be useful Mar 9, 2006

in determining average hour rates (or loss of opportunity rates).

True, but I stand by what I said. Average hour rates don't tell us very much unless we know where those rates are being earned.

What I call your "get-out-of-bed" rate Mar 9, 2006

Some jobs are more lucrative than others.
I get the odd job here and there where I don't make any money at all, but take it on because I want to help out, or for more mercantile reasons, as I think there may be something in it for me.

However, don't expect me to do freebies in my specialist area. I'm not a mad sleeper but do maintain a get-out-of bed-rate !

I'm sorry Mar 9, 2006

but I can't help thinking that there have been rather too many "how much are you earning" polls. I've reached the "not gonna answer" point. How can I move on to the next one?

Depressing Mar 9, 2006

The discussion of rates is important. In my view, they are clearly depressed, and continue on the way down. Translators are highly educated, specialized people, and make a pittance in comparison to other industries.

Sadly, sites like this one put us in a constant bidding war, especially for some language combinations, to the benefit of the clients, who are able to capture cheaper rates. The industry is so focused on the bottom line, that rates can only go down.

Have you heard such phrases from your clients?

Sure. I tell them "You don't have to. Better yet, go to http://babelfish.altavista.com and get it for free."

I get very few of those, though.

Classification of polling answers Mar 10, 2006

Might have been useful here to have indicated globally at least by continent how the answers were divided?
