I translate from French and Russian. Most of my French stuff is in Word, but I still got a lot of PDF scans of Russian typed documents. Sometimes the quality leaves something to be desired...my next software investment is going to be optical character recognition software, I think...

In my case the majority still comes in Word (55-60%), but other formats (such as Excel and Powerpoint or online translation using client-owned specially developed CAT-software) are increasingly winning ground.

I get most of my work in PDF format. Optical character recognition (even the most professional and up to date ones require a lot of time checking as there are many tiny mistakes) does not give good conversion results and scanned PDF are a nightmare. Obviously, most want their translation in word format, therefore diagrams and tables can give rise to extra work.

And also : Quark, Pagemaker and JPEG files, old typed originals and faxes, video and audio material (files, tapes, ...).
PDF files don't bother, me, but in most cases I don't convert them (too long...) but type the translation directly in Word.

I get a lot in Word, but even more in PDFs (often scanned, with handwritten bits); is there any way of word-counting PDFs? I've never managed :-/ And is there any way of copying text from them into Word? I've tried "save as text" but it seems to scramble the text (could just be my computer!).

I translate a lot of files prepared in TagEditor (from PPTs or PDFs, for example ... but they are normally already prepared when I receive them) - aren't these are tagged text files? I chose "text files" as my response ...... hope I was right to do so.

Hi. If the scanned copy is medium to good quality, you may use ABBYY FineReader's OCR technology: www.abbyy.com to extract the text and send it to a Word file or the clipboard, etc.
I have used this program extensively. My experience tells me that a long document is worth the trouble of applying this program. If it is short, don't bother.

I get many different kinds of formats, mostly Word and XML, but sometimes also xls, ppt, pdfs and paper.
