I assume that you need to have both educational skills and time. I have none of either, so I think I would only be a bad mentor...

I agree with Giovanni and Cindy; "No way" implies a rejection of the concept ("What? Why would I want to train the competition?") and there may be many milder, or simply other, reasons for not mentoring.

Lack of skills or time, lack of contact with younger translators, lack of self-confidence, lack of interest, possibly many others that I can't think of...
The option should have read simply "no." And Mylene is right (sorry, can't do grave accents on my Spanish keyboard): there should have been an option for young translators. Or two: I'm a young tr and would like a mentor; I'm a young tr but I don't need mentoring.
While we're making this poll impossibly long--how about "I've been translating for years and still need mentoring"?
However, to Philippe: Mentoring doesn't necessarily require a large investment of time. Some mentors practically adopt their proteges. Others just give occasional advice. I have a "little brother" here on ProZ whom I have never met but who occasionally emails me with a question. It started as a friendly exchange of emails over a KudoZ question and developed into a friendship. I'm "mentoring"--but it takes only an hour or so a month.

I saw this poll question and was very interested to view the discussion. I am new to this site - I didn't even realize sites like this existed until recently - they are a great resource. The word mentor seems a bit strong - I think it's not so much a mentor that new translators need, (mentoring usually requires a substantial amount of time to be spent), but rather more of a "jump start." The word mentor seems a bit strong - I think it's not so much a mentor that new translators need, (mentoring usually requires a substantial amount of time to be spent), but rather more of a "jump start." The idea of translation has been something that I have been interested in since I first started studying Spanish 13 years ago. In the American school system, I believe there is sometimes too much emphasis on becoming a Spanish teacher. This is certainly unfortunate when there are so many other exciting options out there such as translating or interpreting. So for me, access to an experienced translator is more than beneficial. I have so many questions about how to get started and what some possible opportunities may be in my own community for me to get some practice translating in specific contexts and purposes. I will be graduating from college in a few months and would love to be able to use my passion for and knowledge of the Spanish language in a setting other than the educational one. Any feedback given will be greatly appreciated.

Yes, many are still in the "mentee" category. Or, many of us are in between, and thus would not have as much to offer yet as a mentor.

I am extremely grateful to those senior translators who gave me some excellent opportunities in the past, offering practical advice and feedback on the projects they entrusted me with.
I have occasionally been contacted through my profile for information by new translators or site users and I have, I hope, provided some useful support.
I haven't been "mentoring" anyone, but I do remember how grateful I was for any kind of support received.

I feel exactly the same. What goes around comes around. I am grateful to those who helped me out when I started out and was kind of plunged into the deep end without armbands and forced to swim.
I don't actively mentor anyone, but over the past few years I have had questions from people wanting to start out in the business, so I have given them any advice that I could.
I figure that if I help people, someone will help me when I need it - kind of like karma. So far it has worked for me:-)
