Sleep Jun 27, 2006

I consider I'm in the most productive stage of my life so I chose some years ago to sleep no more than 6-7 hours.

I catch up at weekends sleeping 9 hours.

Catch up at weekends? Jun 27, 2006

Lucky indeed are those who don't get a whole batch of orders on a Friday evening, for delivery on Monday!

I make it up during the day Jun 27, 2006

I was torn between this answer and a simple "yes." I *have* to get enough sleep; when I don't, I get sick. I often get insufficient sleep at night, but I then take a nap during the day. I work till 2 AM regularly, all through the night when necessary, but then I sleep till 10 AM regularly, most of the next day when necessary.

My kids are grown, my grandkids 1000 miles away, so I can pretty much sleep when I need to. Don't have time? Well, I accomplish much more in fewer hours if I'm

No, but I manage... Jun 28, 2006

... so far...

I also have a almost 8-month old son and he's staying at home with me. Between taking care of him, housekeeping and translating full-time... I don't have much time to sleep.

I usually go to bed late (last night it was 4:30 a.m.), then wake up around 8 when my husband comes with the baby and the bottle of milk for me to feed him (I don't even wake up when he's crying), feed the baby and then, both of us (me and the baby) still sleep for two more hours. Then

In those days like today, I let the baby sleep and came to work because I've got a lot to catch up. I couldn't do anything else but taking care of my baby the rest of the day and I've just put him to sleep.

Now I really have to catch up with my work...

At weekends it's the same thing: with a baby you can't catch up at weekends anymore! And if you have work to do... it's the same.

I can manage so far, but I wonder until when...

No, but I manage Jun 28, 2006

I've starterdfreelancing when my daughter was 1 and have long forgotten what getting 8 hours of sleep looks like...

She's 5 now, and hyperactive, but I've worked out a system where I mostly work nights and sleep from 6 AM till noon. I'll have to change my sechedule, though, as I have another baby coming in August (bless the guys who invented laptops! lol) and my daughter is starting preschool in September.

Maybe a babysitter wouldn't be such a bad idea come Autumn...... See more

In the early days, not at all ! Jun 28, 2006

But thankfully that has changed. I am now in a position to refuse work, which was certainly not the case in the beginning. Now if I end up working ridiculous hours, it can be until late in the evening at weekends. It is not easy, but I am able to take time off in the mdidle of the week, the odd half day.
I have never needed much sleep but without any sleep at all, I am use to neither man nor beast ! Even less to clients !!!

2 kids = little sleep Jun 28, 2006

Hi,

I find that working as a freelance translator and being the mother of 2 children is just not conducive to getting a good night´s sleep. Even if I don´t have to stay up late working on an assignment (and that happens less and less with exceptions here and there) or throughout the weekend (this happens more often because agencies love to assign work late Friday to be turned in early Monday, as Astrid already mentioned) my 2 1/2 year old daugther is there to make sure that I don

Hi,

I find that working as a freelance translator and being the mother of 2 children is just not conducive to getting a good night´s sleep. Even if I don´t have to stay up late working on an assignment (and that happens less and less with exceptions here and there) or throughout the weekend (this happens more often because agencies love to assign work late Friday to be turned in early Monday, as Astrid already mentioned) my 2 1/2 year old daugther is there to make sure that I don´t get a good night´s sleep. She likes to go to bed late and get up in the middle of the night, walk around, get into our bed, etc. The 12-year old also thinks that he is too old to go to bed at an appropriate time and keeps getting up for a glass of water, etc.

This is something that all parents have to go through. There is not much catching up on the weekends because when not working, there is quality time to be spent and housework to do!

I am of the opinion, however, that everyone needs a break and if I feel the need and have the time, I try to take a short nap when my daugther does. A tired and cranky mommy-translator is not a good thing!!!

Come one, people, what's the problem with having little children? Those peaceful little angels sleep much of the day and when they don't sleep they sit peacefully in the corner playing with their toys or looking at picture books. That should give you plenty of time to sleep and work.

Ok, ok - I'm only joking! I imagine it must be quite hard at times.

Ok, ok - I'm only joking! I imagine it must be quite hard at times.

Reading your comments, I just remembered that day some time ago, when I was at home visiting my parents. My two little nieces (at the time they were two and three years old) spent the whole day with my parents and me. We had a lot of fun and enjoyed it tremendously. However, after they had been picked up by their mother in the early evening, we sat down in front of the telly and within half an hour all three of us were blissfully asleep on the sofa (and it was only 7pm or so). Well, I suppose those little angels can indeed be quite exhausting.

No kids - but not much sleep Jun 28, 2006

I have a full-time job (9-18) and after coming home I still do my freelance translation until 03:00, so I do not sleep that much.

I catch up usually on Sunday after a long Saturday night party.

Little angels :) God bless them Jun 28, 2006

I cannot complain about my son because we were "waiting" five year for him, but now that he's here... I sometimes think I will never catch my sleep again. And it's been harder as he was "chosen", so we received him when he was 10 months old.

He crawls already (soon he'll be walking) and to adapt my life to this little angel has been quite difficult specially because we only had a 3 week "pregnancy". I used to deliver almost every job before the deadline and now I get sometimes very

He crawls already (soon he'll be walking) and to adapt my life to this little angel has been quite difficult specially because we only had a 3 week "pregnancy". I used to deliver almost every job before the deadline and now I get sometimes very stressed because I cannot manage it and I still haven't learned how to.

Maybe there is also someone here with the same experience that may give me some good tips...
