For many reasons Jul 12, 2006

I wish that I could have chosen several answers for this poll as, other than "for points" or "recognition", I think all answers were relevant.

I chose "to share experience" rather than "to help others" as I consider Kudoz to be a two-way street. When I can help, I try to; when I need help, I appreciate it.

I chose "to share experience" rather than "to help others" as I consider Kudoz to be a two-way street. When I can help, I try to; when I need help, I appreciate it.

For me, Kudoz is also a way of feeling like I have colleagues not too far away. Our profession can be isolating, with people working around the world, but mostly from (the comfort of their) home, and Kudoz is one way to find a sense of community and reassure us that we are not really alone.

When I worked in an office and had a question, I would go and ask a colleague at his or her desk for an opinion or confirmation of a suspicion and I feel that Kudoz works in much the same way.

Not to be neglected, Kudoz is also a means of "networking" and has occasionally resulted in landing jobs from other colleagues. Occasionally it is also just a nice distraction in between two translation sessions and allows one to ponder or research a topic different from that which is on one's plate at a given time.

Cheers,
Jocelyne

The 'several of the above' option is missing... Jul 12, 2006

I learn a lot, and many of the questions turn up in my own work too.

I like to help others (then they help me, that's what it's all about...)

Recognition - well, it's a way of getting my profile ahead of the others. Call it ego-tripping if you like!

Interest... I have an excuse for riffling through my collection of exciting second-hand reference books, surfing the Net, occasionally even phoning a friend who might know the answer (and has time for a chat) <

Perhaps the learning element is most important - I have not decided how to vote!

I replied then - challenge - to challenge words and find their translations.

So this time I replied "Other", bec it's still a challenge - there is a lot of words, which wait to be challenged

I thought it looked familiar. I also want to see "all of the above", and perhaps "just because". Life is too short to have a rigorous motivation for every little thing you do.

Too many reasons & thanks to all kudoz users Jul 12, 2006

Well, someone else has already answered for me I guess, see Christine and JS as well.

Christine Andersen wrote:

- exactly that!!

I like to help others (then they help me, that's what it's all about...)

-again, I like to help, as well as to know that when I need help, someone else will be there for me...

Recognition - well, it's a way of getting my profile ahead of the others. Call it ego-tripping if you like!

- Of course recognition, and earning points (to quote for jobs for ex) is a very good point too. We are all here to get sth out of it as well, aren't we???

Interest... I have an excuse for riffling through my collection of exciting second-hand reference books, surfing the Net, occasionally even phoning a friend who might know the answer (and has time for a chat) By the time I get back to KudoZ, someone else has often answered, but I can possibly agree or comment with my new-found knowledge.

-Christine, I actually have the same problem! I think kudoz has become like a drug to me, I'm pretty new with proz so I probably haven't had the time to get tired of it yet, but I really like to go and search for answers in all sort of reference i can find around the house...or even outside... and so often by the time I try and post an answer, someone else already has, but as you said, you can still agree or comment on it..

So I have voted 'share experience' which I think is the most important thing, but if there was a choice like 'all/several of the above' I would have for sure selected that!

All this to say, anyway, thanks to kudoz, and to all the people using it!!!

It's quite a change from your first answer. maybe next time, you'd ask them to put a sixth box. you two were really funny there.

Kudoz rubs me the right way Jul 12, 2006

I do enjoy going to kudoz a lot. seems like you're a mind reader. i was thinking about the "lonely hearts" column just below kudoz and wondered why i don't go there. maybe kudoz is for the experience and sharing my views, or to see what others are doing. it's wonderful realizing the world does not end at the edge of your table but just begins and barely so there.

and, i hope u come up with other constructive questions.

Learning and challenge Jul 12, 2006

To see others and to show off myself a bit.

To learn, to compare, to estimate oneself. To find my place among those so great (no kidding!) colleagues. To find my own path, mine goals in this life, to feel who I am and to feel I am who I am.

Learning, first of all, that was the option which I've chosen. Until I die, learning is my first goal everywhere, always.

I think this is actually the third time we've had a poll asking why we answer KudoZ questions... I don't understand why some polls are posted more than once and some others never "see the light"... I've personally proposed two or three polls which I thought were interesting and had never been discussed and didn't even get an answer as to why they were not suitable for discussion (which I naturally assume is the case)...

Incomplete Jul 13, 2006

This is a shorter and poorer version of the poll we already had about five months ago.

I kudoz to help others, for the points, because I learn from others colleagues, because I also learn when some difficult terms challenge me and I do research about them. For all those reasons and more. It`s addictive too.

So, your guess was right. I didn`t answer this poll. I coudn`t. I didn`t find the right option. Incomplete poll. I think results cannot be considered valid.

I agree with everyone, but really, IT'S FUN!

(maybe also a way to procrastinate and not feel guilty because it seems to be productive?)
