I live in South America. However, South Americans view both North and South America as a single continent. In fact, children in Chilean schools learn that there are only five continents in geography class. I find it amazing that geography can be that subjective!

It would be great if anyone ticking the 'N/A' option could elaborate a bit on their answer. I am very curious to read from all those who don't reside on a continent.

Idem for British schools - at least that's what I learnt at primary school in England 45 years ago.
And Australia is not one of those 5 continents. They used to talk about the continent of 'Australasia' - but now the term seems to be 'Oceania'.

Indeed - there are actually quite a few different models according to which the number of continents can be anything from four to seven.
According to the Wikipedia article on continents (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continent) the geographic community generally prefers the 6-continent model (Antarctica, North America, South America, Eurasia, Africa and Australia).

According to the options I don't reside in any continent... I live in Central America (not in South America, not in North America)... but there is no option to choose... so... N/A
Now... the pool could just post the option "America"... that's the name of the entire continent! That would be my option in the first place, if we are talking about continents!

Interesting question. So far, out of 180 votes 73.3% reside in Europe(9.25 p.m. India time).
This poll needs to be reposted every six months or so. Because, internet and computers are spreading so fast in many countries, like ours. And, so is proz.com.

I'm interested to see the results, but whether the poll is representative of who uses Proz I'm not sure, and what about time zones? It will need to be on the site a few days to remove any time zone bias.
I'm also interested in the N/A category, what about remote Pacific islands any translators there?

... to see that the majority (so far) seem to live in Europe, because I have always felt that the Spanish/English area of proz appears to be dominated by speakers of N. American English and American Spanish variants, evidenced by the spelling/vocabulary preferences.
I'm glad to find out that I may have been mistaken.

Apart from the explanation we already have from a colleague who lives in Central America, maybe someone lives in Antarctica, and there wasn't that option either...

I chose South America based on US geography, but America is only one.
I'm also proud of being from Central America, exactly, COsta Rica.

Why is it such a bad thing to have a majority of N. American English/Spanish speakers? In any case, most of them are only just starting their work day, so I would expect this poll's results to change quite a bit over the next 8 hours or so.

Hellen and Claudia are right. A part of America is missing. Where is the division line? We have all learned that it is only one continent.

Speaking with a United States Citicen some days ago about this, he was convinced that Mexico is Central America. I have learned that Mexico is North America and America is a "double continent" with two "half continents". As far as I remember, Central America was accounted to North America, incl. Panama. Maybe some people mix up the terms Latin America and South America.
One world and many different views.

Concerning the mayority of English>Spanish translators in Latin America, this is certainly true. However, Europe has a much higher "density" of different languages on a small place and certainly as an important market much more demand for translators. In Latin America, with two main language pairs you cover nearly an entire continent (half continent plus part of the other half) where as in Europe you need much more language pairs to reach the same amount of people.
