Yes, to socialise... Dec 15, 2006

... but it's not so easy when people have family responsibilities (and/or intense workloads), or if the friends/colleagues are far away...
regularly could mean once a year...

Half and half Dec 15, 2006

I work as an in-house translator so I see my colleagues every day. I went to a pow-wow once and I had a bad experience with a participant, so I won't go anymore just in case that person is there. I might loose opportunities to make new contacts because of that.

Spread myself too thin Dec 15, 2006

Yeah it was a yes or no question but I put that in just in case some are reluctant to answer 'no' because they do meet up with other colleagues sometimes. It should have been 'very seldom' or the like.

I'm glad the staff put up this poll of mine 2 days before my powwow. It's a bit comforting for me to see 47% (at this point) voted 'No'. Guess I'm not alone then.

I selected "occasionally".... Dec 15, 2006

...even though I do meet for tea once a week with a group of ex pat women - however, I am the only one who is a full time translator - most of them teach English and only one of them translates occasionally.
I have been to a couple of powwows though!

I'd like to but.... when? Dec 15, 2006

I would love to. It is always wonderful to do so and there are many colleagues out there I would love to meet in person after many years working together with no chance to gather.

So... if I can barely make it to meet our customers, how am I going to manage to meet fellow translators regularly?

classic problem of working from home Dec 15, 2006

I suppose most freelancers who work from home have this problem, as a TM for a medium sized agency I'd love to get our translators together, but this is a bit tricky when people are spread all over the world, even telephone contact can be a problem with timezones.

I think e-mail contact and forums are the next best thing to meeting in person, we've got translators we've worked with for years and never met in person, yet you build up a good relationship.

I've heard very positive feedback from translators who attended the Proz conference in Edinburgh.

I have been to a powwow once, and it was a bad experience for me. So I am not interested in attending another one.

But I meet some colleagues very regularly through e-mail and private fora.

at Christmas or in summer?

We used to have both (summer to find alter-egos to take over work on holidays), but this year it's been too busy...

Occasionally Dec 15, 2006

When a "powwow" fits my schedule. Always nice to see the faces behind the profiles.
Pity that until now conferences were organized at the same date as exams, admission-tests, evening-classes or dates when university exams took place.

I chose "No" Dec 15, 2006

But I would like it to be 'yes'.
Here, where I live, translators aren't that numerous and, as far as I know, they see you as their competitor only. Once I tried to keep in touch with one translator from a translation agency. I shared the ProZ link but she told me later she has no access to the internet and no time to do so, so she prefer the printed dictionary... (no comments)

But I hope and believe I will meet good friends among translators with time and will enjoy meeting them, discussing life and profession.

Best regards,

Now our information on Proz.com is still not updated, though I have mentioned it on several occasions; I hope it will be in the near future.

Meetings are monthly, but because I have been out of town a lot I have not been able to participate as much as I would wish. Most of our members are interpreters, many with the courts, some do translation only and some both. We also offer seminars and other educational activities.

Our members include people from three states (Texas, New Mexico and Chihuahua) in two countries, plus perhaps a few who may be farther flung (my own case for a while). There is a good deal of harmony and we have a good and profitable time associating with each other and working together.

We´ve come a long way; there is strength in unity.

Yes Dec 19, 2006

Not taking into account that, just like Nina, I meet colleagues every day as an in-house, I also meet up regularly with former colleagues and sometimes with other translators (ex-fellow students or translators met through the Internet). Though, I have never participated in a ProZ powwow.
