Source text - English Between ancient fairytales and the avantgarde Oslo is rapidly growing into an exciting, international metropolis, while in the countryside, prestigious projects seem to grow out of nature itself. There has never been a more exciting time for Norwegian architecture. Think about Norway, and you’ll probably imagine mountains, forests and fjords, long summer days and longer, cold winters. And yes, medieval stave churches, mountain hamlets and 1,000 year-old cities are testament to Norway’s agricultural, industrial and historical past. Yet right now a number of modern architectural gems and urban developments are giving the country a flying start going into the 21st century. Oslo is the fastest growing capital in Europe. Massive city development projects are transforming the city into a state-of-the-art modern metropolis. At the same time the city is old as viking lore – and, as prominent architecture critic Martin Filler has pointed out, a treasure trove of modernism. The architect Sverre Fehn (1924-2009), known for applying modernist ideas to traditional Nordic forms and materials, has had an enormous influence on new generations of architects, due to his teachings at Oslo's School of Architecture. Many of the projects reflect the powerful, often violent, contrasts of nature - with wood and other plain, sustainable materials being used in new and innovative ways. The classy Snøhetta Viewpoint at Tverrfjellet or even their glacier-like Oslo Opera House bring to mind the landscapes by which they were inspired, while Juvet Landscape Hotel and the nearby installations along the Geiranger - Trollstigen National Tourist Route blend magnificently in with the surrounding landscapes. Building in wood is on the return in a big way, like the striking Community Church in Knarvik or “The Tree” in Bergen – at 51 meters, the tallest wooden house in the world. As the architecture magazine Dwell puts it, when summarizing our position between the ancient traditions and the new architectural surge: Norway is pointing the way fjordwards. Oslo: A spectacular work in progress While retaining its heritage going back more than 1,000 years, the Norwegian capital is undergoing enormous changes – with a number of notable buildings and city development projects underway. Coming into the 21st century, large parts of Oslo’s seaside areas were more or less inaccessible to the public. They were almost completely occupied by highways, ports and gritty industrial sites. Now there is a huge, ongoing project to transform the face of the city. An entire new district is emerging between the new Opera House and the “Barcode” high-rise buildings that have given the city a new skyline. Two landmark buildings – a new Munch Museum and the Deichman Main Library – will flank the Opera House, next to new apartments, commercial buildings and a long seaside promenade with a city beach. At the other side of the historic Akershus Fortress, the small peninsula of Tjuvholmen is now home to a cluster of modern design housing and hotels, as well as Renzo Piano’s Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art. The new National Museum is under construction nearby, at the site of an old train station. Within the city, the “Vulkan” area has risen around several old industrial buildings by the river Akerselva. Mathallen Food Hall, which opened in 2012, is one of several repurposed industrial buildings along the river, where you find a vibrant culture, good foods and nightlife. That’s not to say that Oslo is all new. For instance, it has several hidden and not-so-hidden gems of early 20th century functionalism: like Villa Stenersen and Villa Dammann, the Ekeberg Restaurant and the Ingierstrand Bath. Marvel at the marble of the Oslo Opera House Let’s go to church! What may come to mind if asked to visualize Norwegian architecture are the old stave churches, named after the wooden posts (Norwegian: stav) that bear them. About 30 of these remain – like the magnificently preserved 12th century Borgund Stave Church, or the slightly older Urnes Stave Church (finished in 1132), which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Some aspects of these are visible in modern church architecture as well – albeit transformed and reinvented. One new landmark is the acclaimed Community Church Knarvik by Reiulf Ramstad Architects, just north of Bergen – a dramatic and stunning, yet still peaceful wooden church. On the other hand, some recent landmark churches have broken decisively with the stave church tradition. The now 50 year-old “Arctic Cathedral” in Tromsø is a masterpiece that brings to mind both the surrounding mountains and the Sydney Opera House, while the 2002 Mortensrud Church in Oslo is a reimagining of the church building in steel, glass and stone. In Norway you also find the northernmost medieval cathedral in the world. The country was converted to Christianity a thousand years ago, by kings Olaf Tryggvason and Olaf II Haraldsson, the latter canonized as a Catholic Saint at Nidaros (present day Trondheim) after his death at the Battle of Stiklestad. Construction of Nidaros Cathedral started in 1070 at his burial place, and was finished some 200 years later. Doch es herrscht Bewegung im Land der Fjorde: Zahlreiche moderne architektonische Schätze und städtebauliche Entwicklungsprojekte sind dabei, dem Land zu einem fliegenden Start in 21. Jahrhundert zu verhelfen. Oslo ist die am schnellsten wachsende Hauptstadt Europas. Gigantische Stadtentwicklungsprojekte machen die City zur hypermodernen Metropole. Doch Oslo ist auch so alt wie das Sagengut der Wikinger – und, wie der bekannte Architekturkritiker Martin Filler es ausdrückte, eine Schatztruhe der Moderne. Oslo: Laufende Arbeiten an einem spektakulären Projekt Mit dem Bau einer Reihe namhafter Gebäude und mehreren Stadtentwicklungsprojekten durchläuft die norwegische Hauptstadt zurzeit einen gigantischen Wandel – jedoch ohne dabei ihre über eintausend Jahre alte Geschichte zu kompromittieren. Mit dem Eintritt ins 21. Jahrhundert stellte sich heraus, dass große Teile des Osloer Küstenbereichs für die Öffentlichkeit mehr oder weniger unzugänglich waren. Fast alle Bereiche waren mit Schnellstraßen, Hafenanlagen und staubigen Industriegebieten zugebaut. Im Rahmen eines riesigen laufenden Projekts soll das Gesicht der Stadt nun radikal verändert werden. Zwischen dem neuen Opernhaus und den Hochhäusern, die der City eine neue Skyline in Form eines Barcodes verliehen haben, entsteht ein völlig neuer Stadtteil. Neben neuen Apartments, Büro- und Geschäftshäusern und einer langen Seepromenade mit City-Strand werden zwei markante Gebäude – ein neues Munch-Museum und die große Deichman-Bibliothek – das Opernhaus flankieren. Auf der anderen Seite der historischen Festung Akershus beheimatet die kleine Halbinsel Tjuvholmen jetzt eine Gruppe moderner Designhäuser und -hotels sowie das von Renzo Piano entworfene Astrup Fearnley Museum für moderne Kunst. Ganz in der Nähe wird das neue Nationalmuseum auf einem ehemaligen Bahnhofsgelände gebaut. Im Zentrum ist das „Vulkan“-Gebiet um mehrere alte Industriegebäude herum am Fluss Akerselva entstanden. Die 2012 eröffnete Markthalle Mathallen gehört zu mehreren umgewidmeten Industriegebäuden am Fluss. Hier finden Sie eine lebendige Kulturszene, ein gutes Lebensmittelangebot und ein reges Nachtleben vor. Und doch ist Oslo nicht nur „brandneu“. Im Gegenteil: Die City verfügt über mehrere verborgene und weniger verborgene Schätze aus dem Funktionalismus des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts. Hierzu gehören die Villen Stenersen und Dammann, das Restaurant Ekeberg und das Ingierstrand-Bad. Das Marmor-Mirakel der Osloer Oper Komm, wir gehen in die Kirche! Was fällt Ihnen ein, wenn Sie an norwegische Architektur denken? Richtig, alte Stabkirchen (oder Mastenkirchen), benannt nach den Holzmasten (auf Norwegisch: stav), auf die sie sich stützen. Rund 30 dieser alten Bauten sind uns geblieben – z. B. die wunderbar erhaltene Stabkirche Borgund aus dem 12. Jahrhundert. Oder die noch ältere Stabkirche Urnes, die 1132 fertig gestellt wurde und heute als Welterbestätte der UNESCO aufgeführt ist. Einige Aspekte dieser alten Gebäude werden noch heute in der modernen Kirchenarchitektur verwendet – wenn auch im abgewandelten, innovativen Format. Zu diesen neuen Wahrzeichen gehört die berühmte, nördlich von Bergen gelegene Gemeindekirche Knarvik des Architektenbüros Reiulf Ramstad – eine dramatische, überaus imposante und doch friedlich wirkende Holzkirche. Andere augenfällige Kirchen dagegen haben mit der alten Stabsbauweise völlig gebrochen. Die inzwischen 50 Jahre alte „Arktische Kathedrale“ in Tromsø ist ein Meisterwerk, das sowohl an die umliegenden Berge als auch das Opernhaus in Sydney erinnert. Und die 2002 erbaute Mortensrud-Kirche in Oslo ist eine Neukonstruktion des Kirchengebäudes aus Stahl, Glas und Stein. Auch die am nördlichsten gelegene mittelalterliche Kathedrale der Welt finden Sie in Norwegen. Vor über 1000 Jahren wurde Norwegen von den Königen Olaf Tryggvason und Olaf II. Haraldsson zum Christentum konvertiert. Letzterer wurde in Nidaros (heute Tronheim) nach seinem Tod in der Schlacht von Stiklestad von der katholischen Kirche heilig gesprochen. 1070 begann man auf seiner Grabstätte mit dem Bau der Nidaros Kathedrale, der gut 200 Jahre später fertiggestellt wurde.

Source text - English Reforming a healthcare system is often compared with turning around an aircraft carrier: painfully slow and logistically difficult. But all over the world, policymakers are rising to the challenge and implementing sweeping reforms of their country’s healthcare. The consequences of the UK’s Health and Social Care Bill, which became law in April, and the US’s Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (‘Obamacare’) are likely to be far-reaching. At the very least they signal changes ahead for healthcare managers. Bupa, a UK-headquartered, global healthcare service provider, sensed the prevailing conditions early and now employs a team of change managers. Danielle Spencer, the company’s Director of Organisational Development, reports that over the last ten years the healthcare sector has had to keep pace with evolving macro-economic factors such as ageing populations, economic uncertainty and technological progress. “To remain competitive, organisations need to be agile in adapting to change,” she says. Engaging with frontline staff But top-level rhetoric will only be effective with buy-in from individual employees or patients. According to Sharon Gabrielson, Vice-Chair of the US Mayo Clinic Health System, change occurs on two levels, organisational and individual – and it is the latter that needs to occur first. “Organisational change only occurs when the individual is willing and able to make the changes required in order to achieve system-wide change,” she says. In 2007, Ms Gabrielson was charged with improving the patient appointment scheduling system at Mayo Clinic, through which 1.4 million patients pass annually. Identifying a number of fundamental barriers in the way of good customer service, and armed with information gleaned from focus group meetings with staff, patients and physicians, Ms Gabrielson built a case for change.
