English to Spanish: Silenced Rivers - Ríos Silenciados
Source text - English A watershed starts at mountain peaks and hilltops. Snowmelt and rainfall wash over and through the high ground into rivulets which drain into fast-flowing mountain streams. As the streams descend, tributaries and groundwaters add to their volume and they become rivers. As they leave the mountains, rivers slow and start to meander and braid, seeking the path of least resistance across widening valleys, whose alluvial floor was laid down by millennia of sediment-laden floods. Eventually the river will flow into a lake or ocean. Where the river is muddy and the land flat, the sediments laid down by the river may form a delta, splitting the river into a bird-foot of distributaries which discharge into the sea. The river's estuary, the place where its sweetwaters mix with the ocean's salt, is one of the most biologically productive parts of the river — and of the ocean. Most of the world's fish catch comes from species which are dependent for at least part of their life cycle on a nutrient-rich estuarine habitat.
Translation - Spanish La cuenca de un río nace en la cima de una montaña o de un cerro. Las aguas de deshielo y pluviales lavan y atraviesan las altas tierras en forma de arroyuelos que desembocan en cauces montañosos de rápido flujo. A medida que el cauce desciende, tributarios y aguas freáticas aumentan su volumen y así se forma el río. Cuando abandonan las montañas, los ríos aminoran su paso, comienzan a serpear y su marcha se hace sinuosa, en busca de la senda que menos resistencia oponga, a través de valles que se ensanchan, sobre suelos aluviales consolidados por el sedimento de crecientes milenarias. Al fin, el río alcanza un lago o el océano. Donde el río se torna fangoso y el suelo llano los sedimentos fluviales pueden formar un delta, dividiendo al río en una “pata de pájaro” de cursos de agua (distributarios) que descargan en el mar. El estuario, donde el agua dulce se mezcla con la salada del océano, es una de las porciones biológicamente más productivas tanto del río como del mar. La mayor parte de la pesca mundial proviene de especies que al menos en un momento de su ciclo vital dependen del hábitat del estuario y de su riqueza de nutrientes.
