Source text - English The research, reported in this month's issue of Nature Medicine, involved the molecular engineering of cells in mice - a procedure that could eventually lead to the prevention and treatment of inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis.
"What we did was to change the concept entirely. We tried to convert dendritic cells (which signal for an immune response) into cells that deliver death signals instead of activation signals," said Dr. Akira Takashima, the Thomas L. Shields, M.D., Professor in Dermatology.
Dendritic cells are specialized white blood cells that serve an important function within the immune system. Normally they send activation signals to T lymphocytes to begin multiplying and initiate an immune response.
"Sometimes the dendritic cells that can help a person acquire protective immunity are also involved in the induction of harmful immune responses," said Takashima. "There are many diseases, especially inflammatory diseases, where T cells play a pathogenic role."
For example, rheumatoid arthritis is a common inflammatory joint disease believed to be caused by an autoimmune response. Patients' immune systems form antibodies that improperly attack the lining surrounding joints, causing chronic inflammation.

In 1984 I graduated from Minsk State Linguistic University, Republic of Belarus, where I studied English and French, as well as pedagogy, psychology, English and American Literature.
Since 1989 I worked as a teacher of English language at a secondary school in Grodno region in Belarus.
In 1993 I joined international construction company “Arge Benoba Wohnungsbau” involved in construction of 12 blocks of flats, social buildings and hospital, external works and a power station in Belarus. My languages (native Russian and Belarusian, English, German and French) were used extensively for interpreting, translations and general correspondence with a focus on legal documents. Participation and interpreting at numerous meetings and negotiations in the company, phone negotiations with UK based company, specializing in providing legal services, as well as with senior officials in the Ministry of Defense in Moscow greatly contributed to improvement of my language skills in respect of legal and contract documentation.
I did greatly enjoy my working in “Arge Benoba”. It is an experience I will always remember. It was the company who believed their staff to be their most important resource. The most important things I have learnt while working for “Arge Benoba” is the ability to work under pressure, to establish priorities and to meet deadlines.
Since August 1998 till March 2007 I had been working as a Coordinator of International Economic Activities at a pharmaceutical company located in Minsk, Belarus. Within the range of my responsibilities were management of different international projects in line with the company’s business, with a focus on purchasing pharmaceutical raw materials and pharmaceutical equipment from leading manufacturers in Europe, USA and China. Good communication between all participants in the procurement process (bank, financial department, quality control and quality assurance department as well as production and customs clearance departments) was necessary for purchasing to function smoothly. Besides the above-listed, participation and interpreting at pharmaceutical exhibitions and audits of pharmaceutical facilities manufacturing raw materials in India and China, in inspecting and acceptance tests of pharmaceutical equipment in Europe, USA and Puerto Rico, translating general business, contract and legal documents, GMP and quality assurance documentation and documents on clinical research of finished pharmaceutical preparations.
Since March 1997 till now I have been a freelance translator, interpreter and a travel guide approved by national agency for tourism.
Since September 2010 I have been in a tourism sector. I worked as a museum guide and a Researcher at architectural, residential and cultural complex of the Radziwill Family at Nesvizh, a site inscribed on the world heritage list "UNESCO". I provided guiding services in English and Russian languages for individual tourists and organized groups from different countries of the world visiting this popular tourist destination. I also accompanied tourists to St. Petersburg. The recent project I participated as an English-speaking travel guide is the beauty contest "Miss supranational 2013". I accompanied and provided the information about the country for the participants from 84 countries of the world who discovered Belarus in their 8-day tour visiting different cities and popular tourist destinations of the country.
