Spanish term

heterocedasticidad

Spanish to English Bus/Financial Transport / Transportation / Shipping
This term occurs in a scientific research paper on public transportation. This term does appear in the Proz glossary, but without any explanation as to what it means.

CONTEXT : "Dentro de la teoría de la utilidad aleatoria existen varios modelos de elección discreta, que suponen una distribución de probabilidad conjunta para el término aleatorio. Otros consideran cierta correlación entre las variables definidas, incluso la existencia de ***heterocedasticidad*** (distinta varianza entre alternativas); "

Discussion

Noni Gilbert Riley Feb 14, 2007:
It´s a factor keyed into statistical calculations. One calculation written about that I translated referred to "robust to heterocedasticity", ie capable of withstanding non-uniform variance. I can just about get my head round that! Hope it´s of some help.
Noni Gilbert Riley Feb 14, 2007:
The term is used in econometrics. I´ve translated it before (David´s right as far as I can remember) - now I´ll try and find it to see if context can help towards an explanation in words of 1 syllable!

Heteroscedasticity

Heteroscedasticity
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Plot with random data showing heteroscedasticity. In statistics, a sequence or a vector of random variables is heteroscedastic if the random variables in the sequence or vector may have different variances. The complementary concept is called homoscedasticity. (Note: There seems to be no standard agreed-upon spelling for these words; they are sometimes spelled homo- or heteroskedastic or (incorrectly) -schedastic, depending on location and personal taste.)

When using a variety of techniques in statistics, such as ordinary least squares (OLS), a number of assumptions are typically made. One of these is that the error term has a constant variance. This will be true if the observations of the error term are assumed to be drawn from identical distributions. Heteroscedasticity is a violation of this assumption.

agree Noni Gilbert Riley : Heterocedasticity is the spelling I know. P´s spelling comment looks likely, although indeed these v technical ex-Greek words sometimes have alternative spellings.

agree Patricia Rosas : according to Harper Collins Economics Dictionary, David's spelling is right (could it be a US/UK difference?)
