Dutch term

Gelijkstroom gedreven noodstroomvoorzieningen

Dutch to English Tech/Engineering Energy / Power Generation emergency generators
Can't fathom this. I can imagine that an emergency generator might have DC output, but not that it would be powered by DC input (would rather defeat the purpose of the unit!).
Unfortunately, this is only a document reference with no further context. There are 2 other references to a) 'diesel gedreven noodstroomvoorzieningen' and b) 'statische noodstroomvorziening'.
Diesel-fuelled emergency generators and static units make sense to me, but DC?
Proposed translations (English)
5 +1 direct current emergency power supply

Discussion

Dave Calderhead Apr 10, 2006:
I am not sure whether the famous hydrogen cell power supply is really just another batery or not - but the people developing them for submarines ansd cars are very proud of their products, and they may be offended if you called them: just another battery
Christopher Smith (X) (asker) Apr 10, 2006:
Batteries, of course!!! Just hit me what it was: emergency power from batteries. Got too hung up on the idea of active power sources.

direct current emergency power supply

which would mainly include batteries, but could also be another form coupled via a transformer

biologically/environmentally firendly powered turbine - e.g. chicken or other manure powered/water powered/ wind-powered
or even people powered (remember the treadmill song - to me hip fol the daa, etc.)

not all turbine power generators produce AC power - they can also produce DC power - it depends on whether or not you have a transformer around or not?
Computer equipment actually runs on DC power at he other side of its 'power supply' which include a transformer - laptops run on DC power - converted from AC if you have a mains cable.

Stand up for your right to have some DC power - you know it doesn't alternate - or waver in direction! ;-{)>

Thanks Dave, I see you are on the ball this bright and sunny morning! Out of curiosity, any suggestion what configuration might be involved (other than batteries)?
Peer comment(s):

agree Jack den Haan : Good afternoon, gentlemen! Strictly speaking, the translation would be something like 'DC-powered emergency power supply', but that doesn't quite make sense to me. And yes, it's quite a mouthful, too ;-)
