English term

coelom

GBK English to Bulgarian Science Zoology
Definition from ucmp.berkeley.edu:
Fluid-filled cavity within the body of an animal; usually refers to a cavity lined with specialized tissue peritoneum in which the gut is suspended. The structure and development of the coelom is an important character for recognizing major groups of animals.
Example sentences:
Simpler animals like cnidarians (jellyfish, coral, etc.) and sponges are diploblastic and monoblastic respectively, lacking a coelom. Though the coelom developed in triploblastic animals, some of these animals have lost their coeloms. (wiseGEEK)
Flatworms would have lost the coelom secondarily. Since their acoelomate condition is no longer indicative of a primitive origin, most of their characters put them in the protostomes, with the spiralian phyla. (CBS Interactive Inc. BNET)
Functionally, a coelom can absorb shock or provide a hydrostatic skeleton. (nationmaster.com)
