Miraglia and Chartrand (1995) further noted that although some of the very heavily oiled seals found in Prince William Sound in 1989 showed elevated levels of low molecular weight hydrocarbons in their blubber, elevated levels of hydrocarbons were not found in seals taken from Chenega Bay in 1993 and that the levels of hydrocarbons found in the 1993 blubber samples were as low as the levels found in the laboratory's method blanks.

Eu utilizaria "branco do método laboratorial", dado que se trata de uma forma de verificar a resposta de um dado instrumento ou método laboratorial quando se utiliza uma amostra que não contém o elemento a estudar. Encontrei a seguinte explicação em inglês:
An artificial sample, usually distilled water, introduced to a chemical analyzer to observe the response of the instrument to a sample that does not contain the material being measured. The blank can also detect any contamination occurring during laboratory processing of the sample.
O "branco", por si só, é uma amostra. É usada para servir como termo de comparação, como padrão, para se interpretarem melhor os resultados das amostras que contém o elemento/substância que se pretende estudar.
