Discussion

Johanna Timm, PhD Feb 3, 2007:
Slawek, do you know when this was written or the time in which the text is set ? Kombi could also denote "Kombinat" (in the former DDR) i.e. a co-op shop.
SlawekW (asker) Feb 2, 2007:
Problem is I am translating a Polish text, which had been previously translated from German into Polish, and the translator seems to have cut a lot of corners. Furthermore the context I've given in the note is all of any relevance. These are modern times and the country is Europe;)
BrigitteHilgner Feb 2, 2007:
used that frequently on English language websites. Where is it (which country)? Can't we have one full sentence incl. the word?
BrigitteHilgner Feb 2, 2007:
The context is still not very helpful. Is this a modern day store - then it might be a convenience store (although that is not limited to meat, bakeries & fruit); if this is about the past, "grocery store" might fit. "Combi store" does not seem to be
SlawekW (asker) Feb 2, 2007:
I found some context down the text: it sells meat, bakeries and fruit/veg

combination (food) store

although it sounds rather artificial, I thought I post it (not too many llinks)

In case the emphasis needs to be placed on "combining" two or more stores (such as butcher, baker, green grocer)

corner shop

In the U.K. we have very many of these, which offer a highly eclectic range of goods including groceries and often meat and which often expand into into "mini supermarkets".

New Oxford Dictionary: "corner shop: noun Brit. a small shop selling groceries and general goods in a mainly residential area."
