Un chiodo e nove grappe metalliche provenienti dalla volta
Nel corso del tempo movimenti strutturali della volta e crepe hanno determinato problemi di distacchi dello strato di intonaco. E’ questo il motivo per cui sono state sistemati chiodi e grappe di vari tipi databili con sufficiente certezza.

I found "cramps" - which sounds odd to me, but "clamps" doesn't seem like the same thing.

Thanks Neptunia. I think I will use cramps here. Yes, clamps has more familiar connotations but to me it sounds more modern - and seeing that the findings were centuries old... Thanks for the link - it is amazing!

I think cramps is more commonly used for these giant "staples" but I prefer clamps because it has more familiar connotations for me. I found a glossary that seems to use them interchangeably: http://www.aleckassociates.co.uk/glossary-of-structural-engi...

more context Sorry, it is not a slate roof. I should have been more specific. This concerns a vault (ceiling) inside the Vatican and was built and restored centuries ago. The cramps (or whatever they are) were used to keep the plaster from falling off. It is a technique used at the time.
