"Taught masters degrees require 180 credits worth of work, made of a combination of taught modules, projects and a dissertation. Some are merely given a pass or fail, but commonly taught master’s degree grades are fail, pass, merit (or credit) and distinction. The boundaries for this are usually 50% for a pass, 60% for a merit and 70% for a distinction."

As has been pointed out, the two education systems are not identical, but if you want to convey the degree of academic excellence achieved (and 109/110 at an Italian university IS an achievement), I think something like this would suffice.

the question was asked to me by my daughter (not by a client this time : ) ) who has to apply for a Dottorato and has to complete the form (she has been asked to complete it and not to give the Italian marks) I submitted to you. As I was not able to help her I decided to ask my colleagues...
1 = First class honours
2.1 = Upper second class honours
2.2 = Lower second class honours... e così via.
