Turkish term

sarmal

Turkish to English Art/Literary Philosophy
From an article in 'Cumhuriyet' about '12 eylül' and its effect on the younger generation:

Kültür dünyasının bilgi, akıl, bilinç sarmalında yükselişine değil, içeriğini ve anlamını pek de bilmeden tanıştıkları 'postmodern' denen bir düşünsel dünyanın aklı umursamayan, bilimi küçümseyen, inanç adı altında hurafelere bile yeşil ışık yakan sefil sığlığında kulaç atmak, onları tedirgin etmiyor.

'Sarmal' is used here in a way that does not correspond to its usual meaning of 'spiral'.

sarmal spiral,helix,

this is a concept but not just a word.
It is dialectical helix or spiral of knowledge.Contrary to idealist circular knowledge approach materialist (dialictic) approach developed an epistomological point of view taking knowledge developing as (not simple circles but) but spiral way upward. idealst approcah claimed there was no new things to learn or new knowedge but only repating the past(circular). Like aristotle's books was accepted as conculusive in middel ages.

Ladder, steps...

It is actually used as a spiral but you have to picture the spiral in your mind and connect it with the sentence here. It is like a ladder and you start from bottom and go your way up to top. So the cultural world is going up the ladder of conscious, wisdom and information..Cultural world is improving -enhancing-getting better-it's way in those sectors. This is my interpretation of the word.
You can even say the world of information, wisdom and conscious. Sarmal is not the most essential word here to give the sentence it's meaning.
Hope it helps.
