Today art, outside academic circles, is rapidly expanding its influence also in the world of medical science. Especially in areas where medical infrastructure meets its limits, art has come to compensate, and the results often go beyond many people’s expectations.
We are used to see artistic creations from the perspective of psychological response reaction, as a “rational vent”. However, innumerable scholars have shown that obviously art should be placed at a higher level, since regardless of whether transforming the mind into a intuition or concentrating desire in a creative work, everything touches the core of human consciousness. |

These two publications are useful additions to the study of 17th-century art in Rome and the critical concerns which have reverberated to the present day, with regard not only to the work and careers of Domenichino and Artemesia Gentileschi in this case, but the attempts to understand how audiences from then until now should view their work.
The two books could not be more different. That by Elizabeth Cropper, The Domenichino affair, is a beautifully produced volume with a generous supply of necessary illustrations and outstanding details in colour which accompany the closely argued, detailed but always clear text.
On the other hand, The Artemesia files, is a slim collection of essays, with relatively few black and white illustrations, scarcely larger than a novella, by some of the leading (female) experts on the work of “Artemesia”, as the authors refer to her throughout. It might be thought that there has been a sufficient outpouring in recent years on Artemesia Gentileschi, but that is why most of these essays are so useful, since each one addresses questions which have emerged in response to the 2001 exhibition Orazio and Artemesia Gentileschi, Agnes Merlet’s 1997 film and the novels by Banti and Lapierre, published in 1947 and 2000 respectively. The first essay by Mary Garrard, “Artemesia’s hand”, discusses various attributions in the joint Gentileschi exhibition by means of a fascinating stylistic analysis of the very different painting of hands by father and daughter. | Translation - Italian
Queste due pubblicazioni sono utili complementi allo studio dell’arte secentesca a Roma e alle incognite che ancora riecheggiano, non solo circa le opere e la carriera di Domenichino ed Artemesia Gentileschi in questo caso, ma anche riguardo al modo in cui il pubblico di allora e di oggi dovrebbe esaminare la loro produzione artistica.
I due libri non potrebbero essere più diversi. Quello di Elizabeth Cropper, “The Domenichino Affair”(L’Affare Domenichino), è un volume splendidamente presentato con una generosa selezione delle necessarie illustrazioni e notevoli dettagli a colori accanto al testo meticolosamente discusso nei particolari, ma sempre chiaro.
“The Artemesia Files” (I Fascicoli su Artemisia) è invece una sottile raccolta di saggi, con relativamente poche ilustrazioni in bianco e nero, di poco più lunga di un racconto, i cui autori si annoverano fra i maggiori esperti (donne) dell’opera di “Artemesia”, come verrà sistematicamente chiamata nei saggi. Si potrebbe ritenere che i testi dedicati negli ultimi anni ad Artemesia Gentileschi siano sufficienti, ma questo è precisamente il motivo per cui la maggior parte di questi saggi è così utile, poiché ciascuno di essi pone interrogativi emersi in seguito alla mostra del 2001 Orazio e Artemesia Gentileschi, in seguito al film di Agnes Merlet del 1997 e ai romanzi di Banti e Lapierre, pubblicati rispettivamente nel 1947 e nel 2000. Il primo saggio di Mary Garrard, “Artemesia’s hand” (La mano di Artemisia), discute le varie attribuzioni nella mostra congiunta sui Gentileschi tramite un’affascinante analisi stilistica dei vari dipinti di mani, di padre e figlia. |
